Poll: Fred Upton's panderous pull to the right causes the ship to set sail on Mad Jack's fortunes

by: Eric B.

Thu Aug 02, 2012 at 17:20:25 PM EDT

A bunch of polls have come out the last couple of days for a variety of races around the state.  F'rinstance -- and Fritz Klug is currently my favorite named correspondent anywhere in the state -- this one showing Fred Upton with a 30-point lead over Mad Jack Hoogendyk, which if true says that Club for Growth's attempt to buy a second Michigan Congressional seat will fail.

In other poll news, Hansen Clarke's campaign tried to pass off an online poll that was obviously trolled and that showed him ahead of Gary Peters something like 81 points to 15. Even Trevor Thomas' campaign wouldn't try to do something so nutty as to pawn off something so clearly rigged as real news. I also believe I saw something about Mark Grebner not currently leading his race for Ingham County Drain Commissioner.

Please share your latest polling results below. And, be nice about it. Jeffrey Hadden is watching.

The race to replace former Livonia Congressman Thaddeus McCotter is lining up nicely for former State Senator Nancy Cassis. Meanwhile the attempt to unseat a popular West Michigan Congressman appears to be failing.

I didn't think the Ingham Drain Commission race was of general interest.
I haven't posted a single word about my race for Drain Commissioner, because I figured it was outside the interests of most ML readers.

The poll was legit - or at least as legit as poll we run at PPC poll ever is - and seems to show the public really doesn't care about the issues I've raised.  I just looked at the campaign finance filings, and my opponent (Pat Lindeman, the incumbent) took in roughly $35,000, of which 80% was received from engineers, lawyers, consultants, and employees on his payroll.  "So what?" asks the public.

I've spent four months saying that hiring firms and employees based on their value on the campaign trail is certain to result in huge costs, because  everybody's incentives are exactly opposite the public interest.  "Yawn," replies the public.

I talk about Ingham County's ethics policy, which Lindemann refuses to follow, which prohibits political hiring, fund-raising from vendors and employees, and political interference in contracting.  "Those sound like very good ideas - why don't you send a copy to Lindemann?" asks the distracted Vox Populi.

I've gotten over it.  The public deserves to get what it chooses.

It's the man, not just the race
There were an inordinate number of people commenting on the race on Facebook, plus a lot of our readership is drawn from the Lansing area.  That's why I spend more time on Lansing politics than Detroit. Also, I know a little about Lansing politics, since I have relations there, and next to nothing about Detroit politics.
