Hoekstra still apparently haunted by loss in gubernatorial race

by: Eric B.

Fri Aug 17, 2012 at 15:56:31 PM EDT

You've probably seen this by now, but Pete Hoekstra's defeat two years ago because of Right to Life giving someone else its endorsement (and prompting some talk about a Tea Party Right to Life organization) still apparently bothers him. Now, he's interested in only running in races where his victory is assured.

If Pete Hoekstra had his way, he wouldn't have to campaign for a seat in the Senate right now. Instead, he would simply be chosen by the state legislature to represent Michigan.

This is surprising consistency. Not on the grounds that it's The New Thing among Republicans as a states' check on federal power, but because it would narrow the number of people permitted to vote down to a manageable. That's on top of the fact that in the state of Michigan, it would guarantee his victory without actually requiring anyone to campaign.

This is your Party of New Ideas, mind you. They're always saying that they want to move forward by destroying the past.

Ah yes, the good old days
When state legislatures chose senators, the corruption was enough to gag a maggot.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Remember when...
...only the landed gentry of a certain race and gender could vote.  Ah, those were the good ole days.

These people are insane, and it's why I could never vote for a Republican at the federal level.  For all their faults, one of the central missions of the Democratic Party is to expand and perfect the rights of the citizen.  The Republican Party, these days, is nothing about reducing and narrowing and distilling the electorate to the least participatory possible.  The party of "freedom" and "liberty" my ass.

I could imagine a TERRIBLE series of commercials.
Their punchline would all be the same:  "And to think he was once chair of the INTELLIGENCE Committee."

Hoekstra burbling about repealing direct election of Senators would be the subject of one ad.

A second would center on his heartfelt sympathy for Jimmy Hoffa Jr, and his certainty that the Teamsters no longer require Federal oversight, because they're now free of corruption.

A third would - of course - include his use of Twitter while in Iraq in ways that threatened to get himself and his entourage killed by revealing positions and movement plans.

The fourth ad should probably take up his pride in the racist China ad.  (Footage from the ad, cut to footage of Pete talking about how well it conveyed his message.)

I'm sure op research could provide additional fodder, but why bother?  Nobody would really use these against him, at least not as crudely as I've sketched here.  But if somebody had both the money and the ruthlessness, they'd be a lot of fun.
