| Ruth Johnson is spending an awful lot of time and resources researching and defending her silly citizenship question, a question that's been denounced by basically every media outlet in the state (we have yet to hear from MLive's in-house sedetionist on why it's a good idea), and had to be made in the face of a gubernatorial veto. Keep in mind that her job isn't just to run elections. She's also responsible for making it so that you don't have to sit for 12 hours in line to get your drivers license renewed, which to most people is the most important thing she has to do. Now, she's got to deal with a rebellious county clerk, who find her questions obnoxious and redundant. County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh said Monday a requirement imposed earlier this year by Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson is redundant; is met elsewhere on the form; and could potentially suppress voting. Sabaugh said she’ll effectively defy the secretary of state and use forms that do not include the question. By the way, it's time someone asked the question ... if Ruth Johnson already has the authority to ask citizen questions on voter applications, why did she think the law giving her the power was necessary enough to warrant her active support in the first place? My guess is that we're a lawsuit away from seeing this question tossed as not having a basis in law for asking, and it's something that Ruth Johnson won't be paying to defend out of her own pocket. |
