Eaton County's sheriff is a paranoid, rightwing nutter

Wowsers.

“Get on the news, and you’ll find there’s always been a threat to take Second Amendment rights away,” Raines said. “There’s always been a threat out there.”

He wasn’t specific, but said he’s heard about legislation that would take away Second Amendment rights.

Of course he wasn't specific. He wasn't specific because that legislation doesn't exist. Read the entire thing. Someone's on a wee power trip.

There's also this.

A few years ago, Raines formed a citizens group, called the Guardians of the Constitution, made up mostly of citizens who hold licenses to carry concealed pistols.

Raines called the group, which he said now has about 275 members, a “self-sustaining, non-law-enforcement, citizens group.”

...snip...

The group’s proposed mission statement, which is posted on the website for the sheriff’s office, says, in part: “We believe Sheriff Raines is an innovative and progressive sheriff with a heart for people and for the Constitution. ... A free society shall not be shackled by the bonds of tyranny, and shall have the right to keep and bear arms.”

So, he goes out and forms this neo-vigilante band of armed nuts intended to promote "freedom" but who have no authority to enforce laws I guess until they're needed, and then posts their mission statement -- self-serving to him because it promises fealty from the members -- to a government agency website.

Keep in mind that this is all in support of a paranoia-driven conflict about government overreach.

Bless his heart
Mike Raines is dumb as a board.  In fact, most of law enforcement in Eaton County is overzealous.  I chalk it up to the fact that this formerly rural county's fastest growing areas are in suburban Lansing - Delta Township, specifically - and they realize that Charlotte, there county seat, is becoming less and less relevant as a political and power base as the county becomes more diverse.

Mike has his office for as long as he wants, but I hope the Dems can take back the county commission to offer a check on power, something that had been unimaginable until they won it a few years back, but then lost it in 2010 I think it was.

Eaton has a history of colorful sheriffs
Many years ago (35?, 40?) Gene Hoag was found to have planted evidence in a murder suspect's car, and lost re-election as a result.  He apparently didn't forsee that finding a bloodsoaked blanket would raise eyebrows when the car had already been searched by the State Police.  I guess he figured people would think the MSP had overlooked it. That, and the fact the blanket was property of the Sheriff's Department.

More recently - maybe 1996? - Art Kelsey told an MSP officer that he wasn't willing to take their breathalyzer because he believed they would falsify the results.  For a rightwing cop to run for re-election while questioning the honesty of cops was apparently beyond the power of his alcohol-addled brain.  Bad case of trying to campaign while hiding from the press and public.

As far as I know, both Hoag and Kelsey are still alive and writing letters to the LSJ.  It'd be interesting to know if Raines is in touch with them;  I'm sure they'd have lots of advice for him.
