Bridget Mary McCormack becomes highest profile candidate for high court

by: Eric B.

Thu Sep 20, 2012 at 09:47:00 AM EDT

Everyone's talking about this, this morning. My initial reaction was that it's the cast from a Tee Vee show most popular among political liberals that aired a decade ago, and that it's not likely to be effective outside that narrow group. Then, I gave it a bit more thought and realized that the race for state Supreme Court has become a matter not of convincing everyone to vote for you, but to get your people to vote for you. It's four minutes, which makes it a bit long for Tee Vee, but it's gone viral this morning, which is probably these days even better.

By the way, the message for voters to flip the ballot and vote in the non-partisan races was key four years ago when Diane Hathaway got Cliff Taylor fired. Now, it's getting spread ... right about the time that absentee ballots are being distributed. Is it just me, or are we quickly coming to a point where it's illegal for campaigns to distribute campaign materials in traditional balloting areas, but where it's commonplace for them to do it in the form of electronic media to people voting in their living rooms?

Power of celebrity
Don't underestimate the power of celebrity that the video gifts to McCormack's candidacy.  People will love the idea that Bridget Mary McCormack brings some Hollywood sizzle to Michigan. But you can expect the Republican script to focus on a massive TV ad smear against her in the coming weeks that will try to turn her into a commie, terrorist-loving defender of criminals and they won't think a second about any fact-checking nerds at Michigan Truth Squad.

Power of celebrity
That's sort of my point. The celebrities used in this are all mostly familiar to a very narrow range of voters, political liberals. Hell, I know her sister mostly from that series she was in on USA Network.

After giving it a bit of thought, I realized those were precisely the target of this video. It's a message to political liberals to vote in the Supreme Court races and that Bridget Mary McCormack is the choice of every political liberals' favorite fictional president (well, not mine since I'm probably the only liberal on Earth who didn't watch The West Wing).

Exactly
Straight ticket Democratic voters are the target and, in fact, that's the explicit message of the video; it even mentions straight ticket Dems.  Falloff diminished=victory.

Not the Only One...
The few times I tried watching the West Wing, that Mamet/Stoppard/Lish snappy repeat-the-same word over and over again coupled with so much sanctimony nearly made me throw the remote at the TV.

Looks like...
...she may have stuck her head too high above the parapet:

Michigan Republican Party officials have filed a formal complaint against University of Michigan law professor and state Supreme Court candidate Bridget McCormack for what they called "flagrant violations" of Michigan's judicial canons, which prohibit judicial candidates from acting as featured guests at political fundraisers.

McCormack, a Democratic Party nominee, was a scheduled guest for Thursday night's Kent County Democratic Party Annual Gala. The complaint, filed with the Attorney Grievance Commission, said Michigan GOP spokesman Matt Frendeway, who said other complaints are likely forthcoming, including one related to the release Thursday of a McCormack promotional video featuring the cast of "The West Wing."

Liz Boyd, spokeswoman for McCormack's campaign, distanced the candidate from the fundraiser in a statement issued late Thursday in response to the complaint.

"The Kent County Democratic event was not organized by the McCormack for Justice campaign and the invitation from a non-campaign affiliated group listing Bridget Mary McCormack as featured guest was not authorized by the campaign. Bridget Mary McCormack will not be speaking to the group this evening."

No one kicks a sleeping dog
I say good on her.  she got the Detroit Regional Chamber endorsement too so she must be doing something right.  GOP is correct to be nervous.
