| I was most gratified to see the Freep single out Proposal 5 as singlehandedly the stupidest thing on the ballot this year, and worthy of defeat for reasons above and beyond whether it belongs in the Constitution. They are right ... more than any other proposal on the ballot, this one has to be defeated. I think its defeat is a greater priority than is passage of any of them that as policy initiatives go are good ideas. It's a stupid idea, it's failed everywhere it's been tried, and it would make it damn near impossible to not just raise taxes but to modernize how Michigan taxes. That is, we'd be forever stuck with a system of taxation built for 1975. Meanwhile, Peter Luke sings to the choir. A very serious messaging problem here is that the people who need to see and read opinions like this are the sort of people least likely to read The Bridge ... people with only a passing interest in state politics. The Bridge serves mostly people with an insider's interest, or news junkies. Those people are mostly likely to either already know how stupid an idea this is, or draw a paycheck as MLive's in-house sedetionist. |
