Where are the real monsters?

(It's probably a good thing to keep children from getting poisoned...   - promoted by JPowers155)

Halloween is just around the corner and along with taking safety precautions for when our children are outside trick or treating, Michigan's Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin need to show their leadership on passing policies to protect our families from monsters within our homes.  Chemicals used in everyday products are contributing factors to diseases in Michiganians such as breast and ovarian cancers, infertility and endometriosis, birth defects, asthma and learning and developmental disabilities such as autism and ADHD.  Scientific evidence also proves that babies in utero are highly affected by these toxic chemicals.

We can scare these monsters away if we take a stand and tell our Michigan Senators to pass the Safe Chemicals Act (SCA).  The SCA is a public health policy that would obligate chemical makers to inform us that their chemicals are safe enough before they put them in our everyday products.  In addition, the Act would give a “green light” to many chemicals that are safe, as well as identify and remove chemicals that harm our health, especially the developing fetus and children.

GreenJobs4MI :: Where are the real monsters?

Some leaders in Congress have already started working on amending the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and the Safe Chemicals Act has cleared an important hurdle by passing out of a U.S. Senate Committee.  But, we need to see all of Michigan’s lawmakers step up to the challenge of improving our federal toxic chemical policy.  Our lawmakers must better balance business interests with the strong public right to have safer chemicals on the market.

What changes should be made and how they will affect the chemical companies are only a few hurdles that need to be cleared.  However, our biggest barriers are the Congressmembers who are attempting to make chemical reform a partisan policy.  It is time for our state's federal lawmakers to stand-up to the chemical industry and force them to use safer chemical alternatives that reduce toxic pollution in our homes and environment and grow green jobs in Michigan.

Halloween is just one night full of monsters and ghosts but scary monsters like toxic chemicals will negatively impact the rest of our lives unless we take measures to fight chemical companies and the Congress members who have been bought and sold by special interest polluters.

Want to get involved?  Add your photo to the FaceBook collage we're creating to show our Michigan Senators that residents in our state want to see less spooky chemicals.  With your help, we can conquer the real mosters that are lurking in every child's room.
