| Well, if you're going to try to incite an insurrection, I guess it's small potatoes to suggest that you might not comply with a law with which you disagree. On a personal note, on that point, I am at a crossroads. As an attorney, I took an oath to uphold the laws of the state if Michigan, and so I have an obligation to obey the laws of the state not only as a citizen but also as a professional. On the other hand, what duty do I have greater than that of protecting my children from harm? If, indeed, I sensed that they were in imminent danger, I have a duty to protect them, and that protection could mean using a gun.
Lest anyone be confused by the rhetoric that an armed parent could stop a school shooting, let us remember the school shooting in California this week that was ended not by an armed security guard packing heat but by people who talked the shooter down. As for the armed guard, we know from Columbine the efficacy of that. There is something unexamined in all this, which is the genuine selfishness and sense of entitlement that you need to feel to think you absolutely have to carry a gun where you know it makes basically everyone else feel uneasy, just because you think you're qualified to shoot it out with your average heavily-armed deranged gun man. |
