Legislature considers yet another idea too dumb for Virginia

by: Eric B.

Thu Feb 07, 2013 at 11:06:13 AM EST

Last week, Virginia rejected the same election rigging scheme that Peter Lund thinks better represents the will of the voters. Now, Joel Johnson wants Michigan women to have an invasive ultrasound before having an abortion, a mandate that Virginia last year rejected as too invasive (they can opt for a abdominal ultrasound). Two Democrats, Charles Brunner and Terry Brown, have sponsored it.

There are times when the outrage just gives way to exasperation. In this case, why is it that ideas tried out in other places that don't work because people ultimately don't want them have to get tried out here? Why can no one say, "Well, this created a giant public backlash in Virginia, so perhaps this is someplace we don't need to go?" Why do we need to buy all of Virginia's remaindered dumb ideas?

The Michigan legislature march of stupid continues.

and there goings
Terry Brown's chances at going for congress, well maybe.

Already old news.  Snyder wouldn't have signed it, anyway, but Bolger came out, today, completely opposed to it.

BTW, those two Democrats need to be made pariah of instantly.

it just really sucks
Terry Brown was the candidate everyone was pushing for to go for CD-10 once Miller Retires or leaves the seat

And Brunner,
Is there any Democrat to be found anywhere in Bay City who is a member of the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party?

Tom Hickner
The County Exec.  I'm sure he's made some compromises along the way, but underneath, he's okay.

at least not in office, sadly that were they need ot be to win those seats, sigh.

The primary reason such bills get introduced is because the sponsor's personal beliefs are a motivation for the sponsor to "serve" in the legislature. Because the sponsor believes that he ( or she) was elected to "do God's work" and that the personal belief represents the "will of God" it is somehow right and proper ( in the sponsor's mind) to continue in the face of public scorn and opposition- in fact, in this belief system it is virtuous. If it could pass and be forced ion the public, that would be peachy with the sponsor. I hope someday this sort of thinking will backfire and there will be a backlash but until then , these sorts of bills will continue to be introduced. I suspect Bolger knows he has spent all his political capital which is why the quick denunciation.

Don't forget the co-sponsors
Bolger left them swinging in the wind. Yes, they do so out of personal conviction, but that only opens them up to the more serious charge that they simply did not anticipate the politics. Now that may play well in Saugatuck (Genetski), but what sort of traction does that make in Kentwood (Yonker)?

The Dem attack is that they cannot separate personal belief from political service. That's the wedge.
