Will they get the right font and point size this time?

Everyone's probably seen this.

Voters for Fair Use of Ballot Referendum is proposing a constitutional amendment that would allow voters to use a referendum to repeal any state law. Currently, state laws that include a financial appropriation can't be repealed by a voter referendum.

The Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan is proposing a voter initiative to amend state law and ban fracking, a form of natural gas extraction.

Approved 4-0. Following last year's fiasco involving the EM petitions, I notice that no one has done much to prevent a repeat by suggest that we alter the way things happen so that the petitions get pre-approval for technical details.

Also, a note on the petition to end the use of appropriations to prevent referendum ... it's a statement on the pathetic state of state government that it would come to this, that the Legislature would be consumed by so much hubris and have so little regard for the public that this would have to be corrected in this fashion.

I was hoping (0.00 / 0)
I was hoping that someone would try to get rid of the appropriation loophole for preventing referendums.

Christ, there will have to be a half dozen initiatives next year just to fix the problems caused by the legislature (or highlighted by the legislature) over the past two years.

Passing the text and format before the Board of Canvassers should protect them. (0.00 / 0)
I'm sure our beloved Supremes are capable of cheating here, but the idea is that bringing the petition to the Canvassers and Elections Division should protect it against later nit-picking.

The idea is that anybody who has a quibble was given a chance to raise it.  Any close question that arises subsequently, which could have been raised before the Canvassers, should be resolved in favor of the petition's validity.  At least, in a non-insane legal world, that's how it would work.
