| Everyone's probably seen this. Voters for Fair Use of Ballot Referendum is proposing a constitutional amendment that would allow voters to use a referendum to repeal any state law. Currently, state laws that include a financial appropriation can't be repealed by a voter referendum. The Committee to Ban Fracking in Michigan is proposing a voter initiative to amend state law and ban fracking, a form of natural gas extraction.
Approved 4-0. Following last year's fiasco involving the EM petitions, I notice that no one has done much to prevent a repeat by suggest that we alter the way things happen so that the petitions get pre-approval for technical details. Also, a note on the petition to end the use of appropriations to prevent referendum ... it's a statement on the pathetic state of state government that it would come to this, that the Legislature would be consumed by so much hubris and have so little regard for the public that this would have to be corrected in this fashion. |
