MDP Chair Poll: Who's going to win?

by: Grebner

Mon Feb 18, 2013 at 16:01:18 PM EST

I'm not asking who you're voting for, but who's going to win?

This is open to lurkers, spambots, sock-puppets, cranks, and even ML regulars.

Grebner :: MDP Chair Poll: Who's going to win?
Who's going to be elected MDP Chair?
Mark Brewer
Lon Johnson
Last minute compromise candidate

Mark Brewer
will win this which will put Bob King and the UAW in the back seat...finally.

I will go out on a limb...
Proportional vote: 62% Johnson, 38% Brewer

Of course, I thought John Kerry was going to win...

By the way, "Last minute compromise candidate"?
Between the two possibilities of (1) Re-electing the Party Chair, and (2) NOT re-electing the Party Chair... what is the compromise? Would that be... NOT re-electing the Party Chair? :)  How is that a 'compromise' from Mark Brewer's supporters point of view?

I know, it is a logical (if not practical) possibility that someone else could be elected, but that hardly makes it a 'compromise' in any meaningful sense. Unless that candidate were somehow more broadly acceptable to a majority of the Party then Lon. But in that case, why is he or she not running now?

When running a poll...
... I always try to provide at least one false choice.  Conceivably the 'compromise' could be to replace Mark with somebody sympathetic to him, who would make the Chair sort of a figurehead position, while creating an E.D. position in which Mark continues to work his magic.

But really, I only offered the alternative to increase the confusion.

i really hate to say it
wouldn't this be the best outcome, Lon and his fundraising ability and mark as ED

[ Parent ]
If Mark knew how to play well with others.
But he doesn't.  I think Brewer would have trouble executing somebody else's plan, and it would lead to tension and factionalism.  The experience of 2002, when he tried to share authority with Butch Hollowell, didn't end well.

[ Parent ]
keep mark as chair, and Lon comes on with a focus on fundraising.

[ Parent ]
and if he really want to be chair
would be a way for him to get experience as a party leader, and he could be groomed within the party as the future chair. Plus this would hoping cut the UAW off at the pass

[ Parent ]
Maybe that Would Work for Obama, Too

[ Parent ]
Well MIChange
I think I had a valid point in reply.

If Warhawkgundam wants to argue that Johnson should take a backseat and earn his stripes, then that argument is valid for others, perhaps when Obama first ran for president.

[ Parent ]
thank you
Thank you, I wasn't sure what you were trying to say there, I see your point, and it's valid, and I see the similarities, I was simply trying to fathom a idea were both side could be happy, while still breaking the UAW's control.

Why are you such a big fan of the UAW anyway?

[ Parent ]
Why is Brewer's campaign a campaign to smear the UAW? I don't hear Lon's campaign smearing the unions that support Brewer. I don't think this is going to play too well in the convention for Brewer, it just seems like a horrible capaign tactic. It does remind me of the Tea Party calling all Obama supporters names. It is not a good strategy. If you cannot run on your merits and your vision, you do not have a real campaign.

[ Parent ]
the UAW is one of the biggest backer of Lon, for reason that look like, there trying to pawn the blame for 2012 off on someone else, were as most of the blame should be laid at their feet, the UAW made themselves a major issue.

[ Parent ]
I disagree
I have not heard or read one negative thing from the UAW or the Johnson campaign. Could you direct me or send a link to where the UAW has been negative. It doesn't count to send me a link where someone else says they are saying negative things, I want direct quotes. I am starting to believe, this UAW bashing is just a Brewer talking point and not a very positive one at that. Really, things that are being said by Brewer supporters are not helping their candidate.

[ Parent ]
ok, no
They have not said anything, Negtive, like mark is a hack or mark has a ugly face. Instead they resorted to Strong arming Club Chairs, and Party Leaders to support Lon "or else."

The biggest problem tho is that the UAW throw it's shrinking weigh and dying corpse criteria 1970's around, to control the party, to push the party to the right and to beat down and keep out minorities groups, and interest groups that are consider democratic party groups, from contributing. On that note am not going to sit here and type out everything the UAW has done that has lead the Michigan Democratic Party to were it is now, as that would take much to time, and be much to long, and everyone should know that history.

This vote is truthfully weather you rather have a Party own and controlling by the UAW and their puppet, or would you like to take this chance to support breaking from the UAW and moving toward the left. given this what change do you want a New Face for the puppet, or actually change to the party?

[ Parent ]
Chair calls
OMG, you do know that the same calls are going out by Brewer and his supporters, but to characterize it as strong arming is really really a stretch. I am sorry I see more diversity in the UAW than I do in the MDP!

[ Parent ]
50-60 year old white guys, and token Africa Americans? what about leadership what the diversity there.

Also you realize the UAW were the one behind keeping the Black caucus from putting up a candidate 2 years ago right?

[ Parent ]
Social Justice
I also see the UAW working for Social Justice, more than most, so please spare me more of the smear campaign. I guess it is all you have since you didn't provide any links or quotes.

[ Parent ]
go look in the other thread, we had someone confirm the call to the Macomb County Commissioner, go Google info about the party chair race 2 years ago, not my job to baby you and hold you hand.

Are you a UAW member or something?

[ Parent ]
are phone calls "strongarming?"

[ Parent ]
Oh come on!
It's the content of the message and who is doing the calling.

"Action is what separates a belief from an opinion."

[ Parent ]
Again rumors and smear
It is just hard to imagine why repeated calls about Brewer are not considered strong arming while calls to support Lon Johnson are called strong arming. I am sorry, but your rumor mill just isn't working.

[ Parent ]
Will there be a last minute deal?
My pick would be choice D - last minute deal.

I didn't vote, because I don't know the internal dem political dynamics. However, if one side has enough votes lined up, oftentimes the person losing drops and takes a consolation prize.

Who do I want to win? I don't know. There's times we destroyed Brewer and times he's destroyed us.

Opinions are my own and not that of LCRP

But your side does separate the Chairman and "Executive Director" functions, right?
I can't imagine Bobby Schostak getting involved in the day-to-day decision-making on all the little fiddly bits of running a statewide political party like MIGOP.

If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Generally right
Although chairs often have their people there.

Thank you, RM...
...so as long as I have you on the line, so to speak, I'm curious about whether the events in Lansing Saturday might have long-term consequences.

It would seem Todd Courser rejected any deals or compromises -- which is consistent with the Tea Party mindset, I'll give him that -- and insisted on a convention floor vote.

A fight where he got 48% of the delegates, despite the support for Chairman Schostak from the Governor, most of the MIGOP "establishment" and the party's biggest donors.

Was the anti-Schostak vote based on ideology, competence or a combination? Did Michigan Right to Life and/or the NRA play a role similar to the unions' at the MDP?

How did this Schostak-Courser split manifest at the district level? I heard third-hand that Rep. Kerry Bentivolio was not pleased by events in the 11th District leadership races. What about Rep. Justin Amash in the 3rd or Rep. Tim Walberg in the 7th?

What happens to Mr. Courser and his supporters now? Were they straight Tea Party, or did he also attract the Libertarians? Is there really a distinction between those two groups anymore? Does he get a vice-chairmanship or something?

Sorry...probably far too many questions. Whatever response you care to provide is fine by me.
