Tom McMillin tosses hat into ring in contest for Michigan's Most Odious Human

by: Eric B.

Tom McMillin, homophobe and minor elected official, sees a community in which he doesn't reside (or represent) trying to broaden the way it accepts people into it, and decides it's a war he's prepared to fight.

ROYAL OAK, MI -- Calling the law "bizarre and discriminatory," state House Rep. Tom McMillin (R-Rochester Hills) is voicing opposition to a Royal Oak ordinance that bans discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals, who aren't explicitly granted those protections in the Michigan constitution,

The Royal Oak City Commission passed the law in March, but enough residents signed a petition to keep it from taking effect, and McMillin said in a news release Monday that he helped circulate the petition.

...snip...

McMillin said he opposes the law in part because it would allow transgendered men and women to use restrooms designated for the opposite sex.

No, it doesn't. You can find text of the ordinance here. Presumably the easily confused McMillin sees language permitted transgendered people from using bathrooms designed for opposite kinds of plumbing in Chapter 4, which reads (in part) thusly.

No person shall discriminate in making full and equal access to all goods, services, activities, privileges and accomodations of any place of public accomodation. ...

It goes on to forbid discrimination against breastfeeding mothers, which we'll assume wasn't part of what dragged McMillin from his home in Rochester to Royal Oak. Apparently, he either didn't bother to read the entire ordinance or got a Clif Note's version from someone who probably confines his or her reading mostly to Exodus and Leviticus from Ye Olde KJV, because if you go on, you find this in a chapter helpfully entitled "Exceptions."

Notwithstanding anything contained in this Chapter, the following practices shall not be violations of this Chapter:

...snip...

(12) To restrict use of lavoratories and locker room facilities on the basis of sex.

Keep in mind that Tom McMillin has a hand in writing and passing state laws.

But, why does it matter in the first place? Tom McMillin is from one part of Oakland County and Royal Oak is in a different part of the county.

Apparently (4.00 / 1)
Apparently the state's roads, finances, poor job growth, review of the educational system and the housing market do not occupy enough of Representative McMillan's time.

Out (0.00 / 0)
I think it's time to play hardball, and I don't care how icky it gets.  I'm not very much a proponent of outing Republicans until they stop the attack, because all they understand is force.  Time to get skeevy with opposition research and totally "go there."
