Sleazy come, sleazy go

When last we caught up with John Gleason, Genesee clerk and register of deeds, he was doing something odious. Was it the time he was suspected in reviving the salacious accusations against Dale Kildee? Was it the time he tried to rig the Senate race in favor of his good friend? Was it, was it, oh at this point, who cares?

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- County Clerk-Register John Gleason won't get his choice of attorneys to defend him against a lawsuit at taxpayer expense.

The county Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday, April 24, to deny a request from Gleason to hire an attorney of his choice at county expense against charges in the lawsuit filed by Melissa Calvert.

Who is Melissa Calvert?

Calvert has said she was shocked after Gleason repeatedly promised her a position in county government -- before and after he took office -- had her train for a job and fill out paperwork for new employees before pulling the offer on the day her hiring was scheduled to be approved.

Calvert's lawsuit says she took a required drug test and was issued an employee identification badge in January before Gleason told her he was under pressure to hire a minority or a disabled job candidate instead of her.

This is what happens (4.00 / 1)
when shadowy back door deals are made to keep someone out of a race. The UAW didn't want Gleason to run in the Primary for Congress against Dan Kildee. So they made him a deal in which he ran unopposed in the Primary for Clerk/Register, a job he can camp out in for the next 30 years. A job he is completely NOT qualified for, by the way.

I don't know (0.00 / 0)
I don't know if blaming the UAW is really the issue, here.  John Gleason wasn't leaving politics, so I'd say them moving him to an office where he can do the least amount of politican damage for the party is probably a net positive in the end.  He's been around so long (name recognition), that the party could completely alienate him and risk him winning a contentious high-office primary and possibly the actual seat, or they could demote, which looks like what was done, and that's if we assume that the UAW did pick him for county clerk in a proverbial smoke-filled room.

BTW, speaking of Gleason, what's the date of the election to replace him in the Senate?
