The cautionary tale of Lesia Liss

by: Eric B.

Thu Dec 12, 2013 at 12:16:26 PM EST

The last 12 hours, I've seen a couple of common themes regaring yesterday's rape insurance rider that will be required of women shopping for health insurance going forward. The first is that three Democrats -- Charles Brunner, Tupac Hunter and Terry Brown -- voted in favor of it. The second is that it's a sign that we need to elect more women to office.

You won't get an argument from me on that second bit. It would be great to see our lawmaking bodies more representative of who we are as a people, which means fewer white men making decisions that affect everyone.

But ... about two years ago, we actually had a state representative who was both a woman and a Democrat. Her name is familiar to all.

When (Lesia) Liss, a former emergency room nurse, voted in favor of new abortion restrictions she was lambasted by the many unions endorsing Switalski, including the Michigan Nurses Association.

The Kalamazoo Gazette's editorial this morning takes to task a different lawmaker, albeit from across the aisle.

This abortion bill is a disturbing example of the far-right political agenda that has come to dominate the Republican-led House and Senate. The votes were along party lines with Kalamazoo-area Republicans Tonya Schuitmaker, Jase Bolger, Aric Nesbitt and Margaret O'Brien voting in favor while Democrat Sean McCann opposed it.

The lawmaker we are most disappointed with is O'Brien, who represents Portage and issued a statement accusing Democrats of playing politics.http://www.michiganliberal.com/newDiary.do

Let's get real. O'Brien's vote was about pandering to the extreme wing of the Republican Party with an eye on the GOP primary in her 2014 bid to represent all of Kalamazoo County in the state Senate.

In other words, ladies, you done got sold out by one of your own because she didn't want to lose her job in a primary race.

Personally, I wouldn't want to be asked to cast a vote on legislation like this, because if I were a woman I'd find offensive and insulting the fact that men -- even ones I agree with -- got to make choices about my body. But, let's accept that there were pretty good reasons why most progressives -- including choice advocates and nursing groups -- got behind Jon Switalski over Lesia Liss.

Yep, agreed - (0.00 / 0)
it's not about electing women. It's about electing (most) Democrats, because the GOP women voted Yes across the board.
