Hate the bigotry, love the bigot

There've been plenty of pixels spilled this week over Goat Killer's latest anti-gay tirade, and lots of them thanking various Republicans for actually saying that the underlying bigotry is bad. The most hilarious of these was Ari Adler's initial response that bigotry is terrible but so is identifying someone who peddles bigotry as a bigot. Today, they've taken a stronger tone.

House Speaker Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, said Wednesday that he respects religious beliefs that may not make room for gay marriage. "But I do not respect, and frankly am disgusted by, anyone who demonizes someone because of their sexual orientation," he continued.

Randy Richardville concurs and as we know so does our benevolent overlord Rick Michigan. They can't replace him as national committee man, the story says (I bet this is wrong at some level ... every document that empowers someone to wield any authority whatsoever provides for the removal of that person if they bring great shame upon the organization, and I'd be willing to bet your firstborn child that somewhere in the bowels of the Republican Party structure is a means to remove Goat Killer from his office), but they will take stern action at this weekend's meeting of the state central committee (this is the one where they'l discuss bouncing Doug Sedenquist from the state central committee).

A draft resolution being prepared for proposal at the committee meeting would affirm support for the party platform, including the definition of traditional marriage, but disavow those who use it "to espouse demagogic rhetoric that is incendiary and unbecoming of civil discourse."

Is it this one? The one that would enshrine the basic sense of bigotry that Goat Killer supports as a state party platform plank, while calling on Goat Killer to tone down his bigoted rhetoric? Because that's not really demonstrating a disgust with bigotry, that's really just a way to tell the bigots in your party to keep their homophobia on the hush-hush so it doesn't cost you votes in upcoming elections.

By the way, had the comments of a state committee person forwarded to me. The person alleged to be responsible for those comments, David Quinton Worthams, chairman of the Kalamazoo County Republicans, says that while he dislikes homophobia, that the media will spin things out of control and that it's the duty for party leaders to not say things that can be spun so as to lead to attacks on the Republican Party.

To that, we rebut from the above linked story.

But Republican state Rep. Al Psholka of Stevensville, who attended the Berrien County reception, said he thought that Agema used the platform in a "divisive" fashion and would have been better served discussing more serious issues facing the state and country.

Guys, the "media" didn't spin this into something bad. It was bad all along. Blaming the media for what the Goat Killer very clearly did excuses the homophobia and enables it.

Time to admit that you have a bigot problem and take steps to address it.

Whether some MIGOPers like it or not... (0.00 / 0)
...Dave Agema's hateful and fact-challenged rhetoric has strong appeal to a significant minority of the Michigan Republican Party's base.

The same base that will swing the August primary vote in many state House and Senate districts.

If Bolger, Richardville or even Rick Michigan do the right thing and kick Goat Killer out of the party, they're taking a chance that the base will turn on them as "RINOs" and "closet liberals" (something many Tea Partiers in Michigan are already doing for incomprehensible reasons) -- possibly handing control in Lansing over to the Democrats.

This about face (4.00 / 1)
This about face, at least in tone, is entirely a result of polling and focus groups.  They see the same polls everyone else sees, and that is that not only don't a majority of Michiganders (or Americans, in general, for that matter) support discrimination based on sexual orientation, but we have clear majorities for out-right marriage equality.  This has moved so fast they don't have a choice but to at least pretend to be ambivalent about these issues, anymore.

They realize they lost this war and wedge issues in general elections, yet they'll continue to try and squeeze the blood out of a turnip in Republican primaries.  I hope Democrats remind Republicans and the general public of the differences of the two parties on this issue.  Actions speak louder than words, and the GOP agenda has been as anti-gay as it ever was.

That's exactly what these leaked statements reflect (4.00 / 2)
They want the exact same agenda. They only don't want you to pay attention to the fact that it's the exact same agenda.

This (4.00 / 1)
This is a perfect example of the "courage" brought on by pure and utter desperation.  You read the press releases, and they are so overly-earnest as to be transparent in their disingenuous motives.

There has been much made of Democrats not being able to capture the mood of the electorate, at the moment.  I don't disagree.  But, I hope that people also realize that external and internal issues are making it so that even absent concentrated Democratic push-back, the GOP is being put on their heels on more than one front.  You've got Right to Life putting them in harms way on an abortion issue so extreme and petty that not a single GOP senator had the guts to make a speech in favor of it on the senate floor.  And on this issue, you've got Dave Agema, the gift that keeps on giving.

We absolutely need to capitalize on all of this.
