Dear benevolent overlord Rich Michigan's people: The Friday news dump ain't what it used to be

by: Eric B.

Fri Dec 27, 2013 at 15:39:00 PM EST

Of course, he signed the "Democracy is for rich people" bill that had its origins in Arlen Meekhoff's contempt for a political system not awash in dark money.

LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder said today he has signed a controversial bill doubling campaign donor limits and protecting the secrecy of “issue ad” donors.

Although it includes a provision designed to thwart an effort by Secretary of State Ruth Johnson to reveal who pays for issue ads that have becoming increasingly influential in Michigan political campaigns, Snyder said in a news release the legislation will “bring an unprecedented level of transparency and openness to the state’s political system.”

I get why the media is giving Ruth Johnson a pass on her "effort" to reveal who pays for issue ads, but guys ... she sat on that proposal an entire month (and probably a half!) before waiting until the day the Senate voted on a campaign finance legislation to go with it. The media is giving her a pass because they've been conditioned to think that any extended olive branch has to be taken seriously and not some contrived stunt, because serious people are expected to assume the best from everyone ... even if their entire personal and political history says the direct opposite thing.

Anyway ... good going, benevolent overlord Rick Michigan. Two days after Christmas, you decided to leave a turd in our collective stocking.

Ruth Johnson reformer (4.00 / 1)
Ruth Johnson's reform proposal was as phony as a three dollar bill.

"Reform" is Republican-ese for "gut" (4.00 / 2)
Especially when education, pensions, or the tax code is involved.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Dump (0.00 / 0)
This is a friday news dump in every meaning of the word "dump."  I didn't even have an inkling of hope that he'd veto this.  He realizes he's too far in.  Why turn back, now?

He better hope to god his monied friends show up for his campaign season, next year.

And a two-days-after-Christmas news dump, no less! (0.00 / 0)

This particular issue may be the one where the local media finally turns on him, as it strikes directly at his promise to be more transparent than Granholm.  And, not only that, what the media hates more than anything else is a secret.  The signing of this bills also reveals just how venal this guy is.

They've spent all year pretending that the Right to Work push was just "controversial", instead of what it was, which was the most devisive tactic used in generation to pit Michigander against Michigander.  They can no longer pretend that this stuff is a blind power grab.  Even the News couldn't swallow this crap.

Turn on him? (0.00 / 0)
This is the same bunch that has given Republicans a pass on everything from RTW to taxing seniors to abortion insurance. They have studiously ignored the failure of businesses to flock to our right to mooch state. They even pretend the House Speaker never tried to commit election fraud.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I was right (0.00 / 0)
The Free Press's Stephen Henderson finally turned on him.  It's funny how much it takes before they cry "uncle", the lap dogs.
