Some people who are running for office this year

A couple of weeks ago, I traveled to Lansing to tape a bloggers' edition of Off the Record. It's airing this weekend, matter of fact (tomorrow night and then again Sunday hereabouts in mid-Michigan). If you've never seen one of these episodes, Skubick gets a couple of conservatives and a couple of liberals together, tosses issues on the table and everyone laughs at the ensuing brawl. The other "liberal" I met shortly before the show while we were waiting for the previous episode to wrap up. It was Tony Trupiano.

I'd never met Tony. We've chatted a few times on the phone over the years and I was on his radio show a couple of times and he generously sponsored this website for several months, but we'd never physically met.

During the course of our taping, he mentioned a couple of times his intention to later this month announce his candidacy for the state House of Representatives. The other day, things were made a little more public in a note on Facebook. I've snippeted two paragraphs.

Yes, that does mean I am permanently leaving the show, which brings me to my second piece of news, and it is hardly going to be much of a surprise, but I will be announcing my candidacy for the Michigan State House of Representatives officially on January 20, 2014. The Federal Elections Commission does not allow radio hosts to be on air and be a candidate at the same times, so the new responsibilities with the UFCW will allow me to feed my family while I campaign in the off hours from my new job responsibilities.

I have made the decision after talking extensively with my family, my friends, many listeners and many partners in Labor and I feel that my time is now and as I have the complete support of current term limited Representative Andy Kandrevas and his political machine, I have every reason to believe that with hard work, thoughtful messaging and engaging people from all political points of view this is a race I can and will win. And, I promise that I will take the same passion and vision I had on the radio to the State Capital. You will all have a voice of reason and command once I am elected. There is much more to come on this but we are in the process of doing all the things you need to have done to run an effective campaign and we will be ready to roll by January 20.

So there is that.

No filed candidates (0.00 / 0)
for this district as of yet, per the Secretary of State website.  Has anyone heard of other potential Democratic candidates for the open Kandrevas seat?

Great Lakes, Great Times.

I trust that Tony has lined up the necessary ducks to move forward with this (0.00 / 0)
Securing a paying job with the UFCW while he runs was key, given the FEC rules and the fact that Tony is not independently wealthy.

Naturally, others are free to anounce and file, and there should be someone who wants to run as the token Republican for what should be a safe Democratic seat.

We shall see.

Safe to assume (0.00 / 0)
That a candidate or two will emerge from Allen Park, as Allen Parkers only like to vote for native Allen Parkers. Now that the district no longer includes Lincoln Park the AP folks will think they have a fighting chance to win the district.

That being said, if Tony has Andy K's support in Southgate and works his home base in DHgts he should be in good shape in the primary.
