The dumbest, most irresponsible way to address the budget surplus

Hey, we've got a budget surplus. It's great news! So, what are we going to do with it? Well, we've got to turn it over to our ongoing experiment in the Dunning-Kruger effect, which means probably the dumbest thing imaginable.

Michigan residents should keep this principle firmly in mind as some opportunistic state lawmakers dangle visions of an income tax cut financed by the state’s $400-million budget surplus.

In the Republican-led state Legislature, Rep. Jeff Farrington, R-Utica, and Sen. Jack Brandenberg, R-Harrison Township, are racing to see who can be the first to introduce legislation to slash the personal income tax rate from 4.25% to 3.9% by 2018. But plenty of incumbents in both parties are salivating at the prospect of offering constituents a tax cut in the months preceding November’s statewide elections.

Well, at least it's not something reckless and stupid, like rolling back the income tax hike of 2007. Because that would be the most reckless and stupid thing imagineable. I mean, I know our ongoing experiment in the Dunning-Kruger effect is capable of great recklessness and stupidity, but even rolling back the income tax hike of 2007 would be too reckless and stupid for them. I mean, the state's roads continue to be in terrible shape, it's sometimes hard to get a cop to come when you need one, our schools are going under, and our approach to higher education is saddling the next generation of job creators (i.e. consumers of goods and services) with mountains of student debt. Not one of those problems is solved by cutting the income tax, so I'm certain that our ongoing experiment in the Dunning-Kruger effect would be so reckless and stupid to offer up the flimsy argument that some kind of promise was made back when the income tax was hiked.

I wish everyone a happy pothole season
The recent harsh weather is going to bring out--pardon the pun--a bumper crop of potholes. Motorists might pay a little less in state income tax but will pay much more to their friendly local repair shop thanks to the deplorable condition of the roads they drive on.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Do they?
Do they really think people are going to fall for this?  Or, are they trying to get this out of the way in the event that most of them are thrown out on their @sses in November?
