Bob King fucks something else up

by: Eric B.

Tue Jan 14, 2014 at 00:00:53 AM EST

From MIRS:

UAW President Bob KING personally asked Senate Minority Leader Gretchen WHITMER (D-East Lansing) within the past 10 days to reconsider entering the gubernatorial race in 2014, but she has since declined the invitation, MIRS has learned.

Asked directly about the request, Whitmer said in a statement, "It's always an honor to be encouraged to run for higher office, but my commitment to my daughters at this time in their lives continues to be the most important thing in the world to me.

"I always appreciate the support I continue to receive from people across the state, but I'm confident that we're going to have strong candidates up and down the ballot this November, including Mark SCHAUER, and I'll be working throughout the year to support our Democratic ticket."

Just when you thought that Bob King's political instincts couldn't be any worse, even after the Proposal 2 and Right to Work debacles ... he goes and undercuts Mark Schauer -- who most people regard as someone who was a reluctant candidate -- by doing this. This is a public expression of no confidence that gives ammunition to Republicans and reason for grassroots Democrats to be demoralized. On top of that, the way they built the ballot to purposefully avoid a primary fight, only to turn right around and try to start one is a sign that for Bob King there is no strategy at work.

Blaming King (0.00 / 0)
for RTW? "If she would have just kept her mouth shut I wouldn't have had to hit her..."

Ahem... (0.00 / 0)
If they'd stuck to enshrining collective bargaining as a right, if they hadn't tried to stick a bunch of extra stuff into the state constitution, if they'd have just kept it simple, collective bargaining today would be a right enjoyed by every Michigander. I can't tell you how many conversations I had that involved to some extent the other person saying that they would have supported a simple, stripped down ratification of collective bargaining. Instead, they fucked the entire thing up and gave the Legislature a very easy excuse to ram through Right to Work. This isn't the case of a wife being battered for no reason. This is a case of some asshole on the street who tries to shit in someone's soup and says, "I bet $100 you won't punch me."

As for the day Right to Work passed, he didn't make a public appearance until it was like the middle of the day. Where the hell was he all morning?

they needed an excuse? C'mon, man... Blaming King is giving the Republicans a pass.

A year ago (0.00 / 0)
About this time last year, there was talk that some were looking to replace King with someone from outside the state. That was actually one of the things that complicated the whole MDP Chair race last year.

That was then, as they say.

Who put that conversation out into the universe... and why? (0.00 / 0)
Sheesh.

Great Lakes, Great Times.

No idea, but it should have never taken place (4.00 / 1)
Whitmer already, last year, said she wasn't going to run for governor and did it publicly and said it was to spend time with her kids. Imagine her going back on that to run a primary challenge against the guy anointed as The Candidate to avoid a messy primary fight. I don't care how much anyone loves Gretchen Whitmer, that would have been a recipe for total up-and-down public relations disaster.

Now, thanks to King's ham-handed cold feet, in addition to failing to mount an insurrection against him, any honest person has to interpret this as a no-confidence vote in Schauer by the UAW president.

This is yet another fine reminder that replacing Brewer with a new party chairman was only part of the job of making the MDP competitive in a blue state.

Do you have poetic license? (4.00 / 3)
If you do, it should be revoked, or at least suspended.

The metaphor stands (0.00 / 0)
If you don't like it, take it up with Bob King. He's the one who's behaved vulgarly here.

Ham-handed cold feet? (4.00 / 5)
Was this phrase approved by the Metaphor Police?

I just invented it (0.00 / 0)
It fits, though. It appears Bob King got cold feet over Mark Schauers poll numbers and took a shine to the end-of-year media attention that Whitmer received. So, he tried clumsily to replace him with her on the ballot, apparently forgetting that just last year she said she wasn't interested in running because of her family.

Thus, ham handed cold feet.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Continuing my MDP/Detroit Lions analogy (4.00 / 2)
Bob King is William Clay Ford.

The UAW has run the MDP for years, and has done a terrible job of it. Not only is the union far less progressive than it was when Walter Reuther is around, but its leadership is as inbred and out of touch as the Soviet Politburo during the Brezhnev era.

The MDP is as amenable to reform as the International Olympic Committee, which at least puts on a good show every couple of years.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

This is a great analogy. (0.00 / 0)
I think I might have even stolen it unwittingly and used it on Facebook.

Which Is Worse (4.00 / 1)
I'm not quite sure which State Democratic Party is more dis-functional - the one I left behind in Michigan or the dictatorship of Mike Madigan under which I live in Illinois.

At least Democrats have won things in Illinois (nt) (0.00 / 0)

Suckage comes in many varieties (4.00 / 3)
Illinois actually elects Democrats but has a corrupt and inbred political machine--you mentioned the Madigans, so I won't--that inflicts the likes of Dan Lipinski and Tammy Duckworth on districts that could elect much more progressive members.

Michigan has oodles of Democratic voters but doesn't elect Democrats because it has an incompetent and clueless political machine that has a worse farm system than the Tigers during the Randy Smith era, and is so deficient in communication skills that it couldn't sell beer to spring breakers in Daytona Beach.

In state after state after state, the Democratic Party is weaker, less progressive, and more detached from the rank-and-file than it was when Howard Dean was elected DNC chair and attempted to rebuild moribund state parties.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

It's becoming a tradition; every 10 months or so, Bob King does something incredibly stupid. It's to be expected, as he surrounds himself with "yes" people like Karla Swift and Wendy Fields Jacobs who don't dare question him. Everything they touch turns to shit, and no one in the Democratic party has the balls to tell them to get bent.

Of course I am a now distant observer, and enjoy reading the back-and-forth on the great site, so am not fully on top of every Michigan Dem logistical move of course. After reading some of these comments though, I thought back to the '70's when I was more involved in Michigan, and Googled "Sam Fishman UAW", and came upon this article...Can't say that I miss Sam, may he rest in peace, but I sure do miss Neil, one of our real founding fathers.

Thanks for posting the link to that story (0.00 / 0)
What makes the UAW's continued stranglehold on the MDP even more exasperating is that today the union has only one-third of the members it had in 1973.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Very interesting.
