GVSU administrators whore out classrooms, get mad when called on it

Quite a lot of attention is getting paid on social media today to an MLive story about how administrators at GVSU are hell bent on selling naming rights to individual classrooms to corporate sponsors. Except that the story is really about how the student newspaper properly identified this as university administrators prostituting their institution -- an institution owned by the public at large -- and the response of said administrators. Like this:

They placed a phone call and sent a strongly worded letter to Lanthorn Editor-in-Chief Lizzy Balboa – which, at one point, called the newspaper “ignorant” and said that if staff writers don’t appreciate donors, they should consider returning their scholarships to the university. The editorial, administrators said, was a “kick in the teeth to generations of donors who built Grand Valley State University.”

Well first off, naming rooms after donors is the real kick in the teeth to the generations of previous donors. All those people gave money because they wanted the university to succeed and gave mostly without the expectation of reward. Now there is one, and reason to believe that anyone who now gives is doing it to get something out of it.

Beyond that, suggesting that students return scholarships for criticizing the practice is just a petty, childish way to react. It's a sign that you don't have an actual defense for your actions, or aren't smart enough to think one up.

Beyond, beyond that, it's a reminder that our universities are being mismanaged all the way around. University administrations in general these days have misplaced priorities, and state government -- our benevolent overlord's assurances the other night aside -- has badly disinvested. The result are students who have to take on debt because the state has so drastically reduced what it spends on higher education and because university administrators are mostly concerned with preserving the pay and perks of being university administrators (not to mention doing things so they are remembered after they leave).

The solution to this would be for students at GVSU to take a page out of the book of their administrators and undersell the university by renting out space on their on torsos. In the case of the newspaper editor, it could be Lizzy Balboa, editor of the Lanthorne, brought to you today by Home Depot.

U-M's business school is the worst offender (0.00 / 0)
The school now bears the name of Stephen Ross, a real-estate tycoon who last year donated $100 million apiece to the business school and the athletics department. Ross owns the Miami Dolphins, and has asked taxpayers to shell out $380 million to buy his team a new stadium.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.
