Pat Colbeck wants his district to benefit from Detroit's misery

by: Eric B.

Fri Jan 24, 2014 at 13:47:34 PM EST

Thanks to a raging case of writers' block, I missed our benevolent overlord's speech on Detroit the other day and proposal to help out pensioners and the DIA. Truth is that I got a bad feeling at the beginning of the week when I read that Rick Johnes had problems with it, and that's when I remembered that Randy Richardville doesn't actually run the Senate, he just works there. I was getting caught up because, you know, devils and details and such, and this stood out in the coverage.

Sen. Patrick Colbeck, R-Canton Township, said he would oppose “any targeted grant for Detroit” that wasn’t coupled with additional money for his communities.

“I’m willing to look at potential solutions, but it has to be fair and equitable for all municipalities,” Colbeck said. “We should not be targeting a bailout for Detroit. ... Otherwise, we’re just rewarding bad behavior.”

Ho-kay, the time has come to stop treating Detroit like it has existed in a vacuum or that our ongoing experiment in the Dunning-Kruger effect had no hand in what happened to the city. If you had a hand in screwing it up, and the suburbs and Lansing certainly did, then you get to put some skin into the game without attaching a bunch of conditions.

Furthermore, in what world do you fix a problem -- bankrupt city -- by devoting problem-solving resources to places where the problem ain't.

"Rewarding bad behavior" = dog whistle (4.00 / 2)
Colbeck's comments play to the stereotype that Detroit was ruined by corrupt public officials, who happen to be African American, and by greedy unions; and that the city is inhabited by lazy criminals who live on the public dime.

Well done, sir!

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Notable (4.00 / 3)
The notable comment I saw from him the other day was the usual trope of throwing money into a hole/blackhole or some such sh%t.  This is now a city getting its finances together for the first time in forever, a city literally under the control of the state, and he's still talking about it as if it's ruled by some Third World chieftan.

It really just tells you all you need to know about him and people like him, or which there are far too many still in the metro area and state, but who are fortunately dying out.  I was heartened by the strike-back against Patterson's vile, racist comments in the New Yorker the other day.  Twenty years ago, he'd have been given the silent treatment or even a pat on the back.

I can't wait until he's kicked out the Senate.
