It's an election year, so we're going to squander the tax surplus with bribes for voters

Worked for Dubya, didn't it?

LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder is planning retroactive tax relief that will put money in the pockets of tens of thousands of Michigan workers this year, according to sources familiar with the budget Snyder will unveil Wednesday.

Details about the tax relief plan were scant Thursday, but a relatively modest tax cut or credit targeted at workers with low or moderate incomes — with a price tag in the range of $100 million — is consistent with public statements Snyder has made.

Sounds progressive to me, almost as if they think the biggest bang they can get for their bucks is to put more money into the pockets of people who will spend it on goods and services, thereby creating demand (and, thus, jobs). I will also say this, that a one-time tax refund to the state's lowest earners is at least financed by a one-time surplus ... not like building a recurring expense into the state's general fund budget by taking the news of a one-time surplus and doing something incredibly short-sighted with it (for that, we need our ongoing experiment in the Dunning-Kruger effect).

I wonder if there wouldn't be a more responsible way to use the surplus than bribing voters in an election year?

This will work because voters are innumerate (0.00 / 0)
A family with a taxable income of $53,000 (I'm using Michigan's median household income) will get a tax cut of $53 for every 0.1 percent the income tax is lowered. That's not even enough money to take the family out to dinner an extra time.

Meanwhile, Michigan roads are in terrible shape and are going to be in even worse shape thanks to this year's harsh winter. Bad roads levy what I call a "pothole tax" in the form of front end alignments, tire replacements, etc. On second thought, maybe the family will skip the restaurant and pay the friendly folks at Belle Tire for car repairs.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Hey Snyder (0.00 / 0)
You want to do something with that surplus, how about giving back the money you stole from senior citizens and the poor?  How 'bout you roll back that pension tax and give back the money you took out of the earned income tax credit?  Thanks.

Lots of places to spend this (0.00 / 0)
How about refunding public schools and universities?  I was reading comments on the Free Press and even those were pretty much in favor of no tax cut and mainly to spend on the roads. I don't think the pandering is going to work.
