Goat Killer's twin sister up for Terri Lynn Land's RNC slot

by: Eric B.

Thu Feb 06, 2014 at 15:21:07 PM EST

This is damned funny.

The tea party candidate who has emerged to run for the Republican National Committee seat vacated last week by Terri Lynn Land is, if anything, to the right of RNC Committeeman Dave Agema on the political spectrum.

Mary Helen Sears of Houghton County (located near the very northern tip of the U.P.) is clearly in the Religious Right mold and, as recently as last March, she called for the purging of all gays and lesbians from the Republican Party.

Agema thinks that gays live a "filthy" lifestyle; Sears thinks they are the work of the devil.

There are apparently three candidates. Naturally, one of them is named Romney since the Republican Party always has a Romney to throw at something. There's also rageaholic Roger KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN's ex-wife (according to the report). Then, there's this lady, who kind of feels like maybe the female cloned half of Goat Killer. And if the two normal people split the vote of the other normal members of the state central committee, then the same Michigan whose party establishment went to great lengths to assert that theirs isn't a party of bigots will be represented by two of them to the RNC.

So the Republicans (0.00 / 0)
can't find a non-crazy person to be a committee member? I have to admit that I am not surprised. This should help their outreach efforts to convince younger voters and moderates that they are not the party of bigots and authoritarians.

They have two (0.00 / 0)
Might split the vote and let the nut slide in, though, which is hilarious.

The GOP has a deep bench of crazy (4.00 / 2)
They're deeper than UCLA during the John Wooden years, when their junior varsity could beat any varsity team in the country.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Ha! (4.00 / 2)
But, don't you dare call them bigots.  So help you god...

The MIGOP is a veritable clown car cavalcade.  They want Agema out, last week, then Terri Lynn Land essentially forces herself out, instead, due to possible coordination with her senate campaign...and now they might end up with two Dave Agemas if they can't get Agema out. lol

So...much...schadenfreude.

Give MDP credit for forcing this error (4.00 / 4)
Looks like the FEC complaint filed against Land by Lon Johnson forced her out as RNC committeewoman, thus creating this sweet spectacle of Republican madness.

Not to throw cold water on our celebration (0.00 / 0)
But it's going to be Ronna Romney-McDaniel.

Calling attention to the possibility that Mary Helen Sears might get elected has probably ensured that it won't happen. The RNC and MIGOP want less drama, not more.

Both Sears and Romney-McDaniel come from Districts potentially "in play" -- the 1st and 11th, respectively. However, Sears does nothing to improve the fortunes of Rep. Dan Benishek...and on top of that would probably support Rep. Kerry Bentivolio over the establishment's pick, David Trott.

Romney-McDaniel has name recognition and has been a quiet but respectable part of the GOP establishment. And a quick dig through Trott's website shows she's already endorsed our favorite foreclosure enforcement thug.

If you've learned nothing else... (0.00 / 0)
...I hope you realize that you can't bet on conventional widsom when it comes to the Republican Party.  Had conventional wisdom played out, the Republicans would have won the Senate in either of the last two congressional cycles.

Don't underestimate the power of Teh Crazee in the GOP.  Establishment Republicans sure don't.  I don't know how you're comfortable to call this for a Romney when they haven't even been able to force Dave out, yet, and lost Terri in the process.  If anythi

Keeping Agema is enough to placate Teh Crazee (0.00 / 0)
Adding Sears as the other RNC Committee member would just be gilding the proverbial lily.

Plus, if nothing else she's from the U.P. Ain't a lot of votes up there, and most of them are already taken for granted by the GOP -- it takes an incompetent stiff like Dan Benishek to give Democrats a fighting chance, and even then they drafted a retired general to appeal to the Bart Stupak constituency.

No, MIGOP really wants someone from SE Michigan (say, Northville) to balance Agema's western base.

Of course, there is a chance they'll make a hot mess of things. But we shouldn't count on it.

Don't count on... (0.00 / 0)
...money winning this either.  That's my whole point; you can't predict anything out of this party, anymore.  You know as well as I do from our own eyes that what MIGOP wants and what it gets are increasingly not the same thing.  I'm not sure knowing what we know you're so convinced that the country club beats the tea party.

If the election were held at a convention (0.00 / 0)
I'd say that Sears would win.  Since it's the state central committee, I might agree with you.  Time to look at the roster and do a fake whip count.

Ronna Romney McDaniel. (4.00 / 1)
Am I correctly recalling that she was considering a run for Senate for a minute or two?  Obviously, she has higher ambition... if the party activists will support.

Formerly known as "Socialite Ronna Romney" (4.00 / 1)
Those were the first three words of Spencer Abraham's attack ad against her in the 1994 primary.

That was her mom that ran in 94/98 (4.00 / 1)
Ronna Romney McDaniel is her daughter. She hasn't run for office yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if she does someday.

Correct. (0.00 / 0)
Found it: She was considering a U.S. Senate run this cycle, after her father Scott Romney confirmed he was not running.

Do we have any Bush relatives in our state, too?
