Governor says transition in state treasurer twice as complicated as for presidents

by: Eric B.

Thu Feb 13, 2014 at 13:44:02 PM EST

Our benevolent overlord Rick Michigan was touted as a non-sentimental business man who would run government like a business, treating people not as constituents but as customers. We now get a pretty good glimpse into how the American business community could allow finance to nearly go into global meltdown last decade.

The transition period was especially important, Snyder said, because Dillon had been devoting extra time to Detroit's bankruptcy, which the governor called "one of the most important issues in the history" of Michigan.

"Wouldn't you like to have this person and the new person working together for three or four months while that transition goes on and you're in the middle of that bankruptcy?" Snyder said. "Folks, I call that common sense."

I don't know about common sense, but I do know that Dillon served in a transitional nature for the new treasurer nearly twice as long as the transitional period from one presidential administration to the next. And, after that point, the ex-president doesn't get kept on the payroll in case the new guy has questions for him.

By the same logic...
Jim Schwarz should sit in on Jim Caldwell's staff's efforts to fix Matthew Stafford. Kwame Kilpatrick should have been kept on to advise Dave Bing and the EM how to clear up his city's financial problems, and GM should have left Rick Wagoner on the payroll because on his watch the company's collapse was the worst trauma it had experienced.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

The State of Michigan Civil Service...
Ususally for executive branch employees, they don't even start looking for a replacement until after someone has left a position.  Saves them a couple months salary.  Perhaps the Governor would consider extending his common sense to his civil service employees as well.
