Bob Corker says Tennessee auto plant can't unionize because of Detroit

by: Eric B.

Thu Feb 13, 2014 at 14:44:22 PM EST

Probably a few of you the last couple of days have paid attention to what's happening with a UAW vote at a VW plant in Tennessee. That's the one where labor and management would like the workforce to unionize, probably because both sides see great value in entering into this voluntary marketplace agreement. You're probably also aware that Tennessee Republicans aren't so concerned with decisions made by private entities according to their own interests in accordance with how the market works, if it means people unionizing. They've threatened to pull tax incentives and other forms of extortion, and then Bob Corker dropped this bomb.

At a news conference on Tuesday, United States Senator Bob Corker, a former mayor of Chattanooga and a Republican, also called on VW employees to reject the union. He called it “a Detroit-based organization” whose key to survival was to organize plants in the South.

“We’re concerned about the impact,” Mr. Corker said. “Look at Detroit.”

The world puzzles by what is exactly meant by this comment. Is it the Detroit of the bridge loans that Corker fought against (and whose revival helped keep thousands of people in their jobs) during a bankruptcy that if it was the fault of labor would have seen all three major auto makers in bankruptcy (Ford, it's worth remembering, avoided bankruptcy because it fortuitiously changed management a year or so before everyone else imploded), or is the Detroit that is now bankrupt, which had nothing to do with the UAW (excepting the loss of quality-paying union jobs and semi-associated flight of money from the city).

What I do know is that as of right now, our governor and legislative leaders has allowed someone else in another state to punk us to make a dumb point.

Ladies and gentlemen, (0.00 / 0)
thank you for tuning into tonight's episode of "When Ideologically-Warped Hatred Trumps Job Creation" ...

Great Lakes, Great Times.

I think Corker is blowing one of these (0.00 / 0)

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

Right to Work (0.00 / 0)
This is what Right to Work really means, and I hope more Americans realize this.

Apparently, Corker & Co. seem to have forgotten that there are some very clear federal laws concerning unionization, some laws they are coming very close to breaking.  I hope the UAW wins this vote, if only to rub Corker's nose in it, and to finally break into the South and allow workers their dignity back if they so choose to grasp it.

Chattanooga is but the first.  There will be more, god willing
