Mackinac Center acknowledges that Snyder hasn't actually increased spending on education

by: Eric B.

For the first week or so after the State of the State, the drones at the Mackinac Center hurled everything -- including the kitchen sink -- at the idea that our benevolent overlord Rick Michigan had cut education spending. Mostly they pointed to the fact that he funneled money into the teacher pension fund as their additional source of funding. Finally, last week, the state's official local oaf -- Fried Chicken Frank -- asserted that the governor had spent more money on education because the feds had kicked in extra (they did, mostly during the years of the stimulus, which mostly let Jennifer Granholm skate by without forcing the issue with Mike Bishop). Finally, people started pointing out that the governor hadn't just started dumping extra cash into the state's teacher pension fund, that state government had for years underfunded teachers pensions and the shortfall was crippling districts around the state. It wasn't additional funding. It was just the state making good on its obligation.

Yesterday, the Mackinac Center was reduced to asking Tom McMillin whether districts around the state wanted to return to the funding level the last year of Jennifer Granholm's administration and then this, which pointed out the state's shortfall to the pension fund and using that to attack pensions.

While we're on the topic, in case you aren't friends with Angela Wittrock on Facebook, you missed one of the great and savage social media beatdowns, delivered by Thomas Morgan to Dave Murray, a former Grand Rapids Press education reporter turns deputy press secretary for our benevolent overlord. Murray tried to assert that education spending is up, to which Morgan used Murray's own reporting that it was cut under Gov. Rick Snyder. In the end, Murray insisted that he was quoting union officials (he wasn't), and then disappeared.

We maybe see why this shift away from the assertion that the governor is spending more on education. Someone pointed to a poll that Gongwer wrote a piece about yesterday (haven't seen it myself) that said a majority of Michiganders reacted to the governor's claim by saying, "Why, sir, are you peeing on my back and telling me that it's rain?"

Aww shucks (4.00 / 1)
I'm blushing.

Facts are wonderful things, aren't they? Now that we have the Google machine, we can easily point out that Eurasia has, in fact, not always been at war with Eastasia.

Maybe MLive's archives aren't accessible on Gateway PCs.
