State government cloaks itself in disgrace in the case of Maria Green

by: Eric B.

Fri Feb 14, 2014 at 09:19:19 AM EST

I'd be hard pressed to come up with a more awful, disgusting government overreach the last many years than how the state handled this.

Maria Green will never forget the day her baby girl was taken from her.

Last September, state Children’s Protective Services workers and police removed then 6-month-old Bree from her Lansing home. All her parents could do was watch in shock.

“I slumped in the street and started wailing,” Green says. “It was tortuous. I didn’t want her with a stranger.”

This happened because Green and her husband use marijuana for medicinal reasons, which they take in capsule and candy form. Medical marijuana has been legal in Michigan since voters approved the law in 2008. And the Greens had done everything they were supposed to under the law.

Here is what the Greens missed out on in their daughter's life thanks to this: Her first steps, and her first words. Those of us who have kids understand that not only are these some of the biggest milestones of parenting, but that they will never be repeated. Your kids' first words are also something that you'll remember for the rest of your life (my son's first word was, "Daddy."). The Greens, thanks to a vindictive custody battle, have had all that stripped away. I'd say that these people are due a huge cash settlement for this, because they were in compliance with the law (and more on this in a second), but there isn't enough money on the planet to restore those missed memories. As I understand it, the child was actually in the custody of a family member, but that changes very little: This is one of those things where someone deserves to lose their job. Even if every line of policy was followed to the letter, someone declined at a very important time to exercise judgment and ask whether this was even legal, which it turns out that it wasn't. In this case, the state has reduced a child to nothing more than an asset to be seized as part of a drug forfeiture case, and just with those drug forfeitures the burden of proof rests not with the state but with a child's parents.

It's sick, disgusting, wrong, and shameful.

I note that the piece goes on to mention that Rick Jones, that pocket edition authoritarian who has been trying to undermine medical marijuana since it passed (with better than two-thirds of the state's citizens in favor of it) wants to drag the rest of us backwards on this by empowering the state to take away people's kids if they have medical marijuana in the house. My question to him, and to the rest of the members of our ongoing experiment in the Dunning-Kruger effect who might think this is a good idea: Are you out of your God damned minds? It's nothing more than a thinly-disguised way of saying, "I realize that you no longer consent to be governed by laws that aren't working, but if you don't do as I say I will take your children."

Republicans have done (0.00 / 0)
everything possible to undermine this law since before it even passed. Even five years after the people made their will known, they still act like the whole thing is a thinly veiled scam by potheads who want to legally get high. Never mind that no harm of any sort can be attributed to the medical marijuana law, other than that inflicted by it's opponents.

As for Jones, he will insert himself into anything that might get him some attention from the media.

Jones and Schuette (4.00 / 1)
Jones and Schuette basically forced marijuana back under ground here in Lansing in particular.  The city was just figuring out how to regulate it when Schuette basically made the industry in the city his singular focus even making comments about how horrible it was to have dispensaries on Michigan Avenue "in the shadow of the capitol."  And Jones had been undermining the law, in general, from its inception.

It's why we so badly need to get rid of Schuette, even more than we need to dump Ruth Johnson.  He is easily the hackiest of the state-wide officials in Lansing.  He's basically a parody of a Republican politician, a crudely drawn caricature, and he either doesn't get that, or doesn't care how silly he looks.  Someone needs to tell him that Michigan is more than his insular, conservative Midland.

Kym Worthy (0.00 / 0)
In my opinion: She could've beat him in 2010 or this year, even run without giving up her position in Wayne County, but she clearly isn't interested.  Presumably she isn't interested in subjecting her personal life to invasion and critiques.

Eye-catching, to say the least!
