Some people who are running for office this year

by: Eric B.

Tue Feb 25, 2014 at 10:31:19 AM EST

Ken Darga, the recenty retired state demographer, is running for the Democratic nomination for the 8th Congressaional District. His campaign looks and feels like what might be described as a Third Way campaign, except he doesn't say that and doesn't have the ooey-gooey centrist feel that Third Way people have. He is running on using actual numbers, which means it feels awfully naive.

About the same time he announced his candidacy, someone mentioned that a CMU social work professor was considering a candidacy. This morning, in Ye Olde Inbox.

This Wednesday in Lansing, Central Michigan University professor Dr. Susan Grettenberger will launch her campaign to represent Michigan's 8th Congressional District on a theme of economic populism and giving voice to everyday Americans.

Grettenberger will be at Central United Methodist Church, adjacent to the Michigan State Capitol, at 9:15am ET to kick-off her campaign with a roundtable discussion featuring small business owners, hard-working people, students, and other voters from the district.

Submitted without further comment.

Two is better than none!
Anyone running against Dave Camp in the Fourth yet?

Great Lakes, Great Times.

I believe
I believe someone brought these two up a few weeks ago.  Darga is going to go over like a lead balloon in this district.  I think he's calculated the mood entirely wrong.  And, he's far enough to the right that he'd get outflanked on the left, and from the right, no one's going to vote for Mike Rogers-lite.

Grettenberger sounds like a Some Dudette.

I really, really wish Dianne Byrum would reconsider even in this redrawn district.  Of course, she has a very comfy job at MSU, these days.  It seems everyone that could at least make this race competitive are too comfortable to risk it.  Whitmer seems legitimately done with politics for awhile.  Virg is mayor for life, basically, and even if he weren't, he knows as well as anyone else that he doesn't have the personality to be anything other than an executive.  Barb might make this competitive, but she's either our SoS nominee or Lt. Gov. pick.
