Michigan's finest legal mind spends money on witness denounced by own employer

It's day two of the state's defense of our same sex marriage ban amendment, and day two of the state fielding a joke of a witness.

One of the state’s key experts in Michigan’s same-sex marriage trial has gone on the defense, drawing criticism from an unlikely source: his own employer.

The Sociology Department of the University of Texas issued this statement Monday about sociologist Mark Regnerus, who believes traditional marriage should be upheld in Michigan because, he says, kids thrive best in that setting.

“Dr. Regnerus’ opinions are his own. They do not reflect the views of the Sociology… Nor do they reflect the views of the American Sociological Association, which takes the position that the conclusions he draws from his study of same-sex parenting are fundamentally flawed on conceptual and methodological grounds and that findings from Dr. Regnerus’ work have been cited inappropriately in efforts to diminish the civil rights and legitimacy of LBGT partners and their families. We encourage society as a whole to evaluate his claims.”

On day one, you might remember, we were shocked to learn that the state's first witness wasn't allowed to testify because he didn't in fact know what he was talking about in any real, meaningful sense. Day two, the state's witness has been attacked as unreliable by his own employer.

What happens on Day Three? I can't wait to see, and you shouldn't either ... we're all ultimately paying for this through our tax dollars. Smell the fiscal conservatism!

Smells pungent...
...like a dying mindset.

Great Lakes, Great Times.

A new poll out today
states that 59 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage. Fifty freakin' nine percent!

Also, polling shows that the minority opposed to same-sex marriage believe by a large margin that the rest of the country feels the same as them -- so, basically, the minority viewpoint inaccurately thinks the rest of the country agrees with them.

Oh, the irony
For years, Republicans like Schuette have campaigned to tighten the federal court rules to make it tougher to qualify as an expert witness. Looks like the rules just bit him in the tailfeathers.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

The case for the bigots isn't looking so tight, is it?  I can see why the pro-equality side was so bullish about this trial even before it began.  I think I see what the judge is doing...

Not just his employer
Just for the record, Mark Regnerus was not just denounced by his employer. His professional association (American Sociological Association) denounced his methodology and filed an amicus brief in support of marriage rights as positive for children, there was an investigation into the review process of the article he published in Social Science Research (in which they determined that there were multiple conflicts of interest), and I believe SSR even issued some apology for their insufficient vetting although I don't think that they retracted the study (which many sociologists think that they should). In sum, he now has zero credibility in his profession, and serves mostly as an argument against tenure.

That's gonna leave a mark.
