Michigan's finest legal mind rests case with witness who says homosexuals are bound for Hell

by: Eric B.

Thu Mar 06, 2014 at 14:37:19 PM EST

How much money did this cost?

His views emerged following a question from plaintiffs attorney Ken Mogill, who is fighting to overturn Michigan’s ban on gay marriage.

“Is it accurate that you believe the consequence of engaging in homosexual acts is a separation from God and eternal damnation?” Mogill asked the state’s expert, then added, “in other words, they’re going to hell.”

“Without repentance, yes,” answered the expert, Canadian economist Douglas Allen, he last witness to testify on behalf of the state in a trial that could make Michigan the 18th state to legalize gay marriage.

Later in the story, a spokeswoman for Michigan's finest legal mind says that she doesn't think that believing that all homosexuals will roast in the flames of Hell taints his testimony as biased.

Admittedly, my younger self did nod off a few times during Mass - but I can't remember hearing the part of the Bible that supposedly condemns people for being themselves.

There are other Christians besides myself who visit this blog - can any of you chime in and let us know where the Bible says that?

I do remember hearing Matthew 25:41-46 - which basically says that people who don't take care of the less fortunate "will go away into eternal punishment." Somehow that doesn't seem to be a concern among too many policymakers.

Schuette's witness list (4.00 / 1)
It makes the lineup of the 2003 Detroit Tigers look competent. And that Tigers team narrrowly avoided losing more games than any team in major league history.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

An economist?? (0.00 / 0)
My undergrad degree was in Economics, so I'll ask the question. What the $%!& relevance does an economist have for this case? Sociology or Psychology, sure, if you're trying to establish rational basis.

I'd swear MFLM is trying to throw this one so the fundies can feel more persecuted, since they seem to like that frame of mind so much. Or maybe he figures throwing it will get the fundies to turn out en masse in November and thus ensure his reelection. He sure can't be trying to win it with this set of witnesses.

I envision more Joe My God sadz for Brian Brown, Tony Perkins, et al, when this one is decided.

I'd agree but I don't think Bill Schuette is that smart (0.00 / 0)
IMHO, he got where he is by being a mediocre kiss-ass who benefited far FAR more than he's deserved from patronage, party loyalty and riding the coattails of much better candidates.

Yeah (0.00 / 0)
Maybe he's dumb enough to think this was his strongest case. Hell, maybe it was his strongest case, come to think of it. Anyway, I can't imagine the state winning this one.

My head hurts (4.00 / 2)
This hurts my brain on so many levels.  First, what the hell is an economist being called as a witness for?  Second, what  the hell is a fundamentalist economist being called as a witness for?

Michigan is so getting gay married by the end of the week if this is the clown car they are going to keep pulling their witnesses from. lol

I'll be glad (4.00 / 2)
to get married a second time (was married over Christmas in MA) once it's legal here.

Congratulations! (4.00 / 1)
I was married in Vermont.  My brothers-in-law were married in New York City.  We live in Pontiac, they live in Brownstown.  Both of us couples plan reiterating our ceremonies in celebration of Michigan's gettin' with the times.

Thanks (4.00 / 1)
We're in Bloomfield Township. I haven't mentioned it to Wade, but if we get a window of eligibility after the district Court ruling, we'll be at the Township hall to get a license and find a judge.
