Warren won't run

by: Eric B.

Fri Mar 07, 2014 at 09:13:48 AM EST

From MIRS.

Sen. Rebekah WARREN (D-Ann Arbor) is ending her one-week exploratory review and will announce today she is a candidate for the U.S. Congress, MIRShas learned.

She will likely face Michigan Democratic Party National Committeewoman Debbie DINGELL, wife of retiring U.S. Rep John DINGELL (D-Dearborn), in the Democratic primary, where the winner is a heavy favorite to win in November. Republican Terry BOWMAN, known for his work with union conservatives, is running in this 66 percent Dem-base district.

Since announcing the exploratory committee last week, Ann Arbor supporters of Debbie Dingell have surfaced in what many saw as an attempt to deter Warren from getting in.

So soon, so soon after we received the political version of a Move to Florida notice.

Update! ... Maybe not (h/t Michael McGuinness comment). The story is worth reading for more than just the stuff about the 12th. It's also got information about the parts that might move around if she gets into the race.

Update2! ... Gongwer.

Sen. Rebekah Warren has just announced she will not run for the U.S. House and will instead run for re-election to the Senate.

In a post on her Facebook page, Ms. Warren (D-Ann Arbor) thanked those who had encouraged her to run for the 12th U.S. House District, but decided another four years in the Senate was the better move.

Alright, this race just got boring. Can I go do my workout now?

Not so fast, sez Warren (0.00 / 0)
"But when contacted by The Ann Arbor News on Friday morning, Warren indicated she still hadn't made up her mind."

Rebekah Warren's talented star continues to rise.  I wish her the best.

2018 will be a much better year for her...I hope (0.00 / 0)
2018 is also the election that will determine who's in charge when the NEXT redistricting is done after the 2020 Census.

To say that's a cycle we can't afford to lose is a vast understatement.

Nope. The 2020 election determines that. Recall that the Republicans controlled redistricting most recently because the Dems lost the House in 2010.

Both Right (0.00 / 0)
2018 will determine which party will control the State Senate, a couple Supreme Court seats, and the AG, SOS, and Governor's offices.  All of these terms are for four years or longer, so they will all be in office for the 2021 redistricting.

2020 will determine which party will control the State House and a couple other Supreme Court seats heading into 2021.

Congress needs... (0.00 / 0)
...Rebekah Warren more than it needs Debbie Dingell. Younger, more progressive, not (completely) institutionalized, not slotted into a (Dingell) compartment from day one. Sad that someone who has never passed a law gets a free pass into Congress due to her last name, whereas Sen. Warren, who has fought for progressive ideals, while also advancing progressive policies in the Michigan Legislature, is forced to stand aside.

I don't think... (0.00 / 0)
...experience in a legislative body automatically makes you the best candidate for Congress. Both Dingell and Conyers have had pretty storied careers, especially back in the day, and neither of them ever in the Michigan legislature or even an elected official before their time came.

Dingell will be another solid Democratic vote in the House, which is all that can be accomplished with a Republican majority for the foreseeable future. Warren sticking around in the Senate for 4 more years and preparing for either a statewide or congressional run in 4 years is much better for the state.
