Right to Life outdoes Americans for Prosperity in the field of disgraceful political advocacy

by: Eric B.

Thu Mar 20, 2014 at 13:41:10 PM EDT

This seems like a rather low blow.

Peters "wants to make sure abortion is accessible and cheap for his daughters," according to the website, which cites a tweet he made about his family earlier this year on the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade and his recent comments about the abortion insurance law.

Does Right to Life really want to be on the record as saying that it believes that Gary Peters believes that his daughters are sluts? Because that's what they are arguing here: Gary Peters wants his daughters to have cheap access to abortins. Why would someone want someone else to have cheap access to abortions? Because they think there's a good chance they'll need one in the future.

Has Gary Peters said anything that would make you think that? This is what he said.

"As the father of two daughters, I struggle with how to tell them that the state we love and where our family has been for generations is now unfairly discriminating against them and makes health care less affordable," Peters said in a statement.

The answer: No.

How very Christian of them, to bear false witness against their neighbor (Biblically speaking). I'm sure there's not a Commandment anywhere in that book of theirs that deals with this.

RTL=GOP (4.00 / 3)
When, if ever, have these hacks ever even pretended to be anything other than the Republican Church Militant?

Church Militant (0.00 / 0)
Haven't heard that phrase since I was in Catholic high school 45 years ago. Maybe someone will bring up "near occasion of sin" as well.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Liars for Jesus (0.00 / 0)
It's people like that who convinced me through their bad example to stop going to church.  A lot of those same people are Republicans, and they helped me leave that party, too.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

What they'll do for power (4.00 / 3)
Politics is rough, but there are things you don't do. This is one of them.

But it does show just how desperate they are. And who could blame them? After all:

1. Peters is a superb candidate.
2. Michigan leans Democratic.
3. The Republican brand is in the toilet.
4. Demographic shifts are threatening their grip on power.
5. The centerpiece of their 2014 strategy - opposition to Obamacare - is crashing and burning (not just because of Boonstra-gate, but also because people are starting to realize that Obamacare is a really good thing).

Oh, the things they'll do for power.

And oh, the price they'll pay for it.

Now on Great Lakes, Great Times, Great Scott: McCann (D) seeking recount for state Senate in Kalamazoo County

They don't even know (4.00 / 1)
They don't even know how badly they will pay for this.  We'll all make them pay, but they can't even imagine how much Gary will make them pay for coming after his daughters.  Whoever signed off on this at RTL's head office should be fired, not just because it's a disgusting piece of work, but because who in their right minds said "yeah, I'll sign off on this"?

They are trying (0.00 / 0)
They are trying to lose Land the election. lol  Seriously, between this and AFP, these third parties are going to destroy whatever narrow chance she ever had of making this competitive.  This was an absolutely nasty and disgusting insinuation.

RTL of Michigan is a bizarre organization.  They act as if they are playing in some Southern state where this sh%t is popular.  It's not.  They are going to do to Land exactly what they did to Hoekstra and Cox during the 2010 primary.  Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.  They had to backdoor the "rape insurance" bill because they knew it didn't have popular support.  I can't wait for November when Peters and Schauer finally end up taking out the trash.

And, where has Land been?  Gary's been all in the media and all over the state, and yet you'd wonder if Land was even running a campaign.  I see why the GOP was panicked trying to find another candidate to try and keep her out of the race.  If she doesn't start showing more life, this may be over quicker than anyone thought for an open Senate seat.

Her campaign is entirely behind closed doors (4.00 / 1)
Her highest visibility event was the fundraiser with Chris Christie -- and when Channel 7 tried to ask either of them questions they were told to get off the property (the country club where the two were hitting up the 1%-ers for money).

Oh wow (0.00 / 0)
I hadn't realized it was the media that they were trying to boot off, I thought it was just the protesters.

BTW (4.00 / 1)
Everyone should read Laura Berman's column in the Detroit News, today.  It's a brilliant piece pointing out RTL's gross hypocrisy in not fighting against the cuts to Hutzel Hospital's funds involving at-risk pregnancies.  We all know this, but it's amazing to see it put into words, and what's even more amazing is that Laura does some simple contacting of RTL's lobbyist to reveal him a fool.

The comments were (4.00 / 1)
immediately: "WELL, WHERE WAS PLANNED PARENTHOOD HUH HUH?"

Clearly for more convenient false equivalency, they opted to gloss over the important subtext that RTL Michigan gets what it wants in the Republican legislature -- ergo, they could have made it so.  Obviously not the same outcome prospects as a result of Planned Parenthood lobbying.

Great Lakes, Great Times.

This will blow up in RTL and Land's face (4.00 / 4)
Attacking someone's kids will leave a very bad taste in the mouths of the moms in my subdivision--and many dads as well.

This was a serious unforced error.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

This really was an unforced error (4.00 / 4)
Gary Peters was never going to get the anti-choice votes.  He will be able to raise funds on this attack and lock in and activate support that might have been only half in.  Land is going to lose, and she can thank RTL for making her into a child-hating monster witch person.  Almost doesn't even matter about the subject matter, dragging a candidate's children into an attack is a cardinal political sin.

[ Parent ]
This (4.00 / 1)
Perfect rundown, Jensen.  I think this will particularly get suburban women who may or may not have strong opinions on the choice/life issue either way to solidfy one way or the other, and mostly towards Peters.  Attacking a candidate's children is a no-go zone, and it's even usually not advised even when the child may be older and campaigning for the candidate.

It blows my mind that this actually crossed some higher-up's desk at MI RTL, and he or she signed off on this thinking it was a good political attack.  The lack of sound judgement shouldn't be surprising dealing with who we're dealing with - the same group that pushed the "rape insurance" legislation despite their being no public apetite for it - but it's still shocking to see when they actually end up doing it.

[ Parent ]
I had a stronger headline (4.00 / 1)
I had the bit about Gary Peters' daughters in the headline to this post. Couldn't leave it, because it felt over-the-top and disrespectful to daughters merely properly identifying what they were really saying.

Among the Trees

Shameless AND stupid. (4.00 / 1)
Is there a chance someone at RTL is secretly on the Peters campaign's payroll? They've made themselves look like assholes using one short, easily understood sentence, with no special knowledge of the candidate or the issue required, or even any awareness that RTL was replying to a statement made by the candidate.
