Data-driven decision making until that becomes inconvenient

by: Eric B.

Fri Mar 21, 2014 at 10:00:06 AM EDT

Leading up to its vote Thursday afternoon, the House was the last remaining hurdle to expanding the EAA and passage was not entirely certain. I'd like to think that the reason for that is that the data didn't support an expansion. The latest studies had students in EAA schools sliding in MEAP results. And you would have thought that lawmakers would have taken pause to reconsider it when the state superintendent notified John Covington, the EAA chancellor, that the state was dissolving its exclusive contract with it, and that the entire thing should have been judged skeptically in the first place considering the cloud under which Covington took the job.

They voted to expand it, of course. We can officially drive that final nail into the coffin of the governor's reputation or data-driven decision making, which is ine because that has always been entirely bullshit (you may file it under how George Bush Jr. was marketed as a "A reformer with results").

A couple of side notes: Lisa Lyons Posthumus appears heading down the path to the worst lawmaker in the state. Every time something horrid happens in the House, she always seems to have a central role in it (she tried to get her husband exempted from Right to Work, called teachers "hogs to be slaughtered," was involved in Jase Bolger's scheme to rig Roy Schmidt's election, even allowed herself to be used as a human shield during Vaginagate). Also, for my Detroit friends ... I hope there's a movement afoot to bounce John Olumba from his seat. The man is an embarrassment.

Do not forget (0.00 / 0)
Please do not forget Harvey Santana, a man who on more than one occassions has come to near fisticuffs with memebers of his own party in the House chambers.  His excuse?  Since Detroit was originally screwed by this experiment, it might as well destroy the rest of the state, too.

I'm tired of these petty, personal politics out of these two Detroit politicians.  I'm as mad as anyone with how the state has treated them as of late, but that's not excuse to be so damned petty.  These are grown-ass men acting like children.  They were the reason this passed.  John Olumba literally giving the house the silent treatment out of protest at the end of 2012, I think it was?  Really, dude?

The vote was 56-54, if I remember correctly, and six Republicans crossed the aisle.  Don't worry; this will be corrected in November.  It's time to clean out the entire house.

I noted Harvey Santana's support (0.00 / 0)
It was strange. Also, too, the ongoing support for pro-Life nonsense out of fear of the churches.

But Olumba seems like a special case, the sort of person who simply doesn't belong in the House in the first place. (We can argue about Santana, I suppose, but I remember having favorable feelings about him previously about something.)

Had Santana and Olumba voted No... (4.00 / 1)
...then two of the six Republicans would have voted Yes, resulting in the exact same 56-54 margin.

The GOP whip count was spot-on this time.

What's unfortunate is that Santana's vote gives them the fig leaf of "bipartisan" support.

I don't (0.00 / 0)
I don't believe that for a second, but whatever.  Santana and especially Olumba have never played well with others.  This was never a done deal, it's why the expansion failed the first time.  The difference was the two Dems providing cover.

One Dem and one "Independent" (0.00 / 0)
Olumba is a far worse offender than Santana, who at least has a strong voting record on most other issues.

Which is why his turn here was so shocking to so many: Santana is no Tim Melton (the former Dillon lieutenant and DINO who resigned from the House to become a lobbyist for Michelle Rhee's StudentsFirst).

That the GOP reached exactly 56 votes with those two is the very definition of successful whip-counting.

Worst Politician Ever (4.00 / 1)
The only thing saving Lisa Lyons Posthumus from this title is the continued presence of Jase "I'm not a Crook!" Bolger. Otherwise, she would be a leading contender.
