History made while most of you slumbered

by: Eric B.

Sat Mar 22, 2014 at 09:29:22 AM EDT

According to social media this morning, this took place at 8:05 this morning in the Ingham County courthouse. Thanks to Josh Pugh, with the Michigan Dems, for snapping this and making it available. Marsha and Glenna are their names. There's another photo of a pair of dudes from Oakland County, where Lisa Brown is clerk. There's a pretty delicious irony that both women were also the two silenced during Vaginagate. Uppity women make history.

Reading about the first couples
in Ingham and Oakland got me really emotional and a little teary-eyed. Thanks to Barb and Lisa (and to the clerks of Muskegon and Washtenaw) for opening today.

Historic day in Mason
My family and I were in Mason around 12:30 this afternoon and stopped in at the courthouse to have a look.  Barb Byrum was still conducting weddings and there appeared to be more people waiting a turn in the lobby outside the clerk's office.

Barb had her part exactly right: "By the power FINALLY vested in me by the State of Michigan..."

I'd know those windows from anywhere.  Jury summons will do that. lol

Looks like an appeals court has stopped these, but good on Barb.  She wasn't going to open until Monday, but got her crew together to open, today.

Speaking of irony....
Has anybody noticed that both Jim Stamas, who played a key role in silencing Lisa Brown during "Vaginagate" in 2012, and Bill Schuette ("Michigan's Finest Legal Mind") both hail from Midland?  I feel as though it is underappreciated how much of what sucks the most about Michigan comes out of this town, where children are fed Republican politics along with their Mother's milk.  How come folks like Dan Benishek, Justin Amash and Tim Wahlberg get all the credit for being the most reactionary nutjobs in Michigan, but never the cookie cutter Republicans from Midland, and their Dow family bankrollers (e.g., Margaret Ann Riecker, Junia Doan, etc.)?

BTW - since Stamas is term limited after 2014, it has already been decided by the GOP bankrollers who will be his replacement:  Kurt Iuetter, whose family is in insurance.  Since this decision has already been made, the primary and general election are superfluous.  Gary Glenn hasn't gotten the message yet, but it is a fact.  Wonder what young Kurt thinks about uppity liberal Jewish women from down South?

For one, it's the size of the place.  There are about 84,000 people in the entire county, compare that to the other GOP bastion in this state, West Michigan, which has over 1,000,000.  Secondly - and you kind of hit the mark on this one - and that is that they are cookie cutter.  They aren't the entertaining whackobirds types you find in West Michigan or even Southeast Michigan.  It's mostly a bunch of old school corporatists and country club types who are every bit as conservative as any GOPers anywhere else in the state, but don't like the attention.

I do wish more attention was paid to Midland, especially because it punches so far above its weight in state politics.  But at the end of the day, it's still so small-town and the personalities so relatively bland and old fashioned (i.e. Dave Camp), that the media's not ever going to set up camp, there.  I mean, Bill Schuette is practically a character out of Footloose, but that's in a state with the likes of Dave Agema who are straight out of Idiocracy.  Dave Camp has managed to pull off the Establishment Republican/Adult-in-the-Room Republican look for a very long time, now.  I do not expect him to start pontificating, for instance, how gays are from the devil or some such offensive craziness.
