Gall in the family

Well, now my friend, this is interesting.

Michigan Democrats charge that officials in Republican Gov. Rick Snyder’s administration moved to protect the business interests of the governor’s cousin from a round of steep budget cuts shortly after Snyder took office in 2011.

A batch of new documents and emails obtained by the state Democratic Party and shared with POLITICO suggest that George Snyder — the owner of furniture company DBI Business Interiors — lobbied a top administration official to protect a multimillion-dollar furniture contract with the state on behalf of Haworth Inc., a Michigan-based office furniture company with a history of supporting GOP candidates and causes. Democrats say not only were the cuts ultimately nixed, but the furniture contract was increased that year.

To which, we finally get a definitive statement from our benevolent overlord about something.

Snyder’s gubernatorial office has flatly denied these claims, calling it a “manufactured story and issue.”

I disagree. Here's the lead paragraph from the Freep's story.

LANSING — A top adviser to Gov. Rick Snyder whose salary was paid from corporate donations intervened to halt cuts to state furniture purchases in 2011 after he was lobbied by Snyder’s cousin, the Michigan Democratic Party alleged Tuesday.

That's Richard Baird, the same top adviser to our benevolent overlord who was drawing a salary from the NERD fund. This is, by the way, around the same time that our benevolent overlord was telling us that the path to prosperity went through the Swamp of Shared Sacrifice. I guess some sacrifices are shared more than others.

The 21st century version of the spoils system (4.00 / 7)
Instead of putting friends and family on the public payroll, they're given lucrative contracts, consulting gigs, and other goodies.

I call it The Invisible Handout.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Brilliant (4.00 / 3)
Hy Dudgeon, I think you just coined a term that will make it around the world if you'd like that to happen.  The Invisible Handout is brilliant. lol

Thank you, MGG (4.00 / 2)
Yes, I'd love to see this go global--even if the credit goes to others. It's that important that people expose the Republicans' hypocrisy on the issue of free enterprise.

By the way, I'm sure you read about and/or heard Terry Lynn Land butchering a question about Obamacare. And to think, she had four years to come up with a better response. Now I agree with you: that woman isn't ready for prime time, and never will be.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Land flubbing the question about the ACA was in Salon (0.00 / 0)
Link: Republicans losing it over new Obamacare data: Why their position is collapsing.  Here's the paragraph that was quoted at Daily Kos.
Case in point: Terri Lynn Land-Michigan's one-time Republican secretary of state, turned Senate candidate-held a first-ever conference call with reporters to trash the ACA on its fourth birthday. But confronted with the question of what happens to people with preexisting medical conditions if the GOP repeals the law (and thus eliminates the individual mandate)-Land's press aide, Heather Swift, commandeered the call, and tried to take the whole thing off the record.
Wow.  And to think Nate Silver currently has the seat as only 55% likely to remain Democratic.  I expect that percentage will go up substantially this fall.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

I second that (0.00 / 0)
"The Invisible Handout" is a great phrase.  May it be a meme that goes viral.

Et tu, DBI? (0.00 / 0)
I grew up a few blocks from their headquarters and storefront.  So, one of the owners is a Snyder?  How unfortunate. lol
