Paul Krugman cites work of fixture in Michigan political blogging

This is pretty great.

So what would real data-driven reporting look like (beyond what goes on at the sites Noah mentions, and also at the Times)? Well, here’s an example: Charles Gaba’s ACASignups.net. Gaba, a website developer, realized that nobody was systematically keeping track of enrollment data for Obamacare, and has turned himself into one-stop shopping on the law’s progress. And he really fills a need: when you read news reports on Obamacare, you can tell right away which reporters have been reading Gaba and know what’s happening and which reporters are relying solely on official announcements — or, worse, dueling political spin.

Probably the worst kept secret around here is that Charles Gaba has been a fixture in Michigan political blogging since before I got involved back in 2006 (I asked him this afternoon if he minded if I outed him by his associated screen name, and he said it wasn't a big deal, but I am loathe to do it even when I get permission ... consider it a personal weakness). This was always supposed to be the potential of the blogosphere, that it would offer an in-depth reporting product not found at websites maintained by Ye Olde Emm Ess Emm. Charles Gaba is one of those guys who is the potential of -- and I really hate this term -- citizen journalism. I'm glad to see him getting acknowledgement everywhere for his important work, and I'm curious why the state's political media isn't giving this story, a fairly important one, any coverage.

Oh yeah, here's a link to his site. Go read it and follow it.

Kudos to Charles (4.00 / 5)
I am proud to call Charles a friend.  He told me his project started as a hobby, but I am not at all surprised at the level of professionalism he quickly brought to it. The interesting question is this: why in God's name wasn't the mainstream media keeping track of enrollments?  You'd think that would be one of the most basic aspects of the ACA story. Are they really that bad? Gives me the creeps to think about it.  What else are they not telling us?

I'll be honest here...I've been reluctant to ask (4.00 / 1)
...any of the reporters who have interviewed me that exact same question.

I work it in indirectly; I'll say "well, no one in the media seemed to be keeping track, so I did..." and just let it hang there, as opposed to calling out the reporters directly. Seems more polite that way (besides, for all I know the guy interviewing me wanted to do that but had the kibosh put on it by their editor/publisher...)

Congratulations, Charles! (4.00 / 3)
Three cheers for Michigan's own.

Great Lakes, Great Times.

Not only has he done great work, but he's a nice guy to boot (4.00 / 2)
And he's really become a burr under the saddle of the right wing.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.
