To the winners go the spoils, just as the Founding Fathers imagined

I first read this story, about road funding being divvied up chiefly to Republican legislative districts, and assumed that it was an April Fools joke. I mean, how could anyone be so nakedly stupid? But then I realized it was published two days before April 1 and that this had to be real.

Anna Heaton, deputy press secretary for House Speaker Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, said the reason they weren't allowed was simple.

"They weren't welcomed into the discussion because they didn't vote for the funding," she said.

The $115 million special allocation last year was included in the overall state budget bill, which Democrats voted against. But the vote in opposition to the state budget was for a variety of reasons for different members, including a lack of funding for Medicaid expansion and a cut to revenue sharing, not because it included additional road funding, said Katie Carey, press secretary for the House Democratic Caucus.

This is a fairly blatant and inexcusable act of political corruption, using votes during the budget process as an excuse to shortchange Michigan communities of road repair money. It makes no sense, and frankly it sends a message to any business looking to locate here that whether they will have good roads to drive on is subject to partisan posturing, not on the sound principles of providing a service.

Then again, this is the same group of people who can't quite grasp the meaning of "two-thirds."

Two can play at that game
Bolger may be content to sit on his majority in his district, fully aware that he won't face the consequences at the polls. But there ARE statewide seats up for grabs, and if the Dems don't hammer the GOP for this in the state races, they deserve to lose.

Yeah I read this in Crain's on Monday
There was almost a tone of "look, this is why you need to vote Republican, otherwise you'll suffer potholes."

Maybe I was reading between the lines too much.
