What's a little graft among friends and family?

by: Eric B.

Fri Apr 04, 2014 at 14:49:45 PM EDT

Oh, hey, now this isn't at all disconcerting...

The allegations involve a February conversation at a local bar about the alleged payoff scheme. The conversation was between Detroit Police Chief James Craig, the Rev. Horace Sheffield and political consultant Adolph Mongo.

The article doesn't mention that Horace Sheffield was last heard from considering a run for John Conyers' seat. Is this still operative?

Sheffield is a sterling statesman (0.00 / 0)
He was also recently arrested for domestic violence against his estranged wife.

As for Adolph Mongo, he sets the bar for political consultants so low that you need a metal detector to find it.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Yes (0.00 / 0)
he's running. See his Web site here: http://www.betterwithsheffield... I had to laugh at all the typos and ridiculously formed sentences, particularly in the "Issues" section. God forbid Rep. Conyers' health becomes an issue before the August primary. After solid candidates like Glenn Anderson and Bert Johnson ran in the 13th in 2012, it would be a shame that a guy like Sheffield, who offers nothing over and above Conyers, could just waltz in!

I'd prefer Gary Sheffield to Horace Sheffield (4.00 / 1)
He had a brief stint with the Tigers, and racked up some unusual records during his career, including hitting 30 homers for 5 different teams and hitting a homer before his 20th birthday and after his 40th.

Maybe (4.00 / 2)
Maybe I've been reading the articles on this wrong, but from what I can tell, if anything, Horace isn't the instigator of this possible crime, sounds like he could actually be an informant.

I would vote for a ham sandwich before I would vote for a Sheffield, but I'm interested in this unnamed person that tried to bribe/corrupt the council.  I remember when the vote was held for leadership most people being shocked how it turned out.  I even think Jenkins even remarked that it sounded like something was being traded, though, there was no mention at the time of outside influence.

I'd keep my eye on Cushingberry in all of this.  I was horrified this man won, and even more suspicious when he was able to worm his way into leadership.  I'm also suspicious of Gabe Leland, as I think he was the only freshman to vote for the Jones-Cushingberry leadership team.  Jenkins was far and away the better choice, and it's obvious back-room deals were made.  Detroiters are tired of this sh%t.  Newbies like Benson and Leland should have known better, and it makes me think they were bought.

That's my take on it, too. (4.00 / 1)
Reading between the lines, it seems like Sheffield was complaining to Craig, while Mongo was listening.  Note that Craig was the only one of the three not quoted in the article.  I do hope that it's what I think.  I like Craig and I'd be very disappointed if it turns out that I'm wrong about my interpretation.

Hmm.. (4.00 / 1)
I'm interested in what you're implying about Craig.  I don't see his fingers in this, either, at least not as the perpetrator.  At worse, maybe he was looking the other way; he's not been in Detroit long enough to be connected to this type of thing.

The story makes pretty clear this unnamed someone was tied to Kilpatrick & Co.

What I hope about Craig... (0.00 / 0)
...was that he was the one asking and that Sheffield was answering.  In other words, he was trying to figure out what was going on.  As for what he was going to do with the information, I have no idea.  It could range anywhere from simple curiosity to gathering intelligence.  In that case, Sheffield would have been a kind of informant.  Besides, as you noted, he's new here and wants to know what he's dealing with.

What I read of it (4.00 / 1)
He is the one that went to the authorities based upon what he heard.

Craig, that is. (4.00 / 1)
Didn't meant to be vague. My apologies.

In that case, he did exactly what he was supposed to.  I'm happy.
