Nolan Finley mansplains why Lisa Brown is shrill

by: Eric B.

Thu Apr 10, 2014 at 13:22:01 PM EDT

Nolan Finley has a fairly obnoxious column today, if by "fairly obnoxious" you mean "odious" and "entirely obnoxious." It's an attack on Lisa Brown as Mark Schauer's choice as lieutenant governor. Among other things, it gives you a glimpse of why rightwing blogging never really got big in this state ... that space was all occupied by the caveman crowd at the Detroit News. Before we get to the nut graf that everyone is talking about, there's this:

But what about those Democrats who deserted the party four years ago to help elect Gov. Rick Snyder because they perceived him to be a moderate who would bring jobs and development to the state without bowing to the right wing on contentious social issues?

Most of those people understand that they were misled, since the alleged moderate has turned out to not be a moderate at all, but instead a spineless administrators who has caved to rightwing social special interests at almost every turn, who has failed to deliver on his promise to fix the state's roads, got publicly pantsed in trying to set up a state-run health care exchange, got publicly pantsed again in expanding Medicaid, had a dickens of a time getting Common Core through the Legislature, and whose "business-savvy" ideas about government mostly involved cutting taxes for businesses, shredding the social safety net and protecting the state contracts of his friends and family members. But, please, do go on...

Her confrontational style will give the ticket the spunk the colorless Schauer lacks, but won’t broaden his appeal. Brown could help bring in campaign cash, however. She’s still milking the vagina business, and is a minor celebrity among feminists.

So minor a celebrity to feminists that Mark Schauer picked her as his running mate to help excite the Democratic base. In case you're paying attention from the cheap seats, the underlying premise behind this is the same as the underlying premise behind Terri Lynn Land's "The wimmenfolk don't want equal pay, they want the freedom to run their wimmenfolk errands and hold down a job" speech. But, I'm sure that right now, Nolan Finley is under the impression that the criticism is being aimed at him because he dared speak truth about Lisa Brown and not at all because strong women in general hate being portrayed as if the strength of their opinions comes primarily from them being unlikable harpies.

Did Finley realize what he was doing?

You're right (4.00 / 2)
I didn't notice that. Just proves my point.

"There is only one thing more useful in politics than having the right friends, and that is having the right enemies." (4.00 / 6)
Nolan Finley is one of the right enemies for Lisa Brown, and Finley just volunteered for the position.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Nolan Finley interviewed me once. (4.00 / 5)
While I was College Democrats president at CMU as well as a columnist for CM-Life*, I threw a fit when the MI DHS decided that college students don't count as poor people and completely cut all food assistance to them.** Finley called me and tried to get me to admit to abuse, to a total lack of need for benefits, and that I, personally, used a bridge card. Obviously None of my answers were satisfactory to him, because none of my quotes made it into his column (it may have been an article).

As such I don't count on Mr. Finley for much.

*If my stupid personal anecdotes are getting old, tell me and I'll be happy to stop.

**For the record, I actually did support bridge card cuts to students, since they qualified for the maximum benefit automatically ($200/month) which is patently absurd. But to ask a college student, which is supposed to be their full-time job, to also work a minimum of 20 hours and only get a fraction of the previous help? That's excessive, and frankly insane.

Please keep passing along your personal anecdotes (0.00 / 0)
I found what you wrote about your encounter with Finley to be very enlightening.

I don't know if Finley just got more obnoxious over the  years, so I didn't notice him earlier, or if he'd switched positions at the paper.  But, I knew this guy had completely jumped the shark when the paper did a series on the riots.  I don't say this lightly, but this man is a straight-up racist bigot, and has since revealed himself to be other very negative things. Unlike a lot of other odious characters, it's become clear to me that he's not just playing up his opinion for page clicks, but that he's an actual true believer.

The News has always had a conservative lean; it carried the country club and chamber of commerce's water for as long as I can remember.  What Finley has done is made the thing into something even less respectable and even more cartoonish and incoherent.

Thank god for Finley, this year.  If he keeps up this level of unadulterated derangement, he might be the one that inadvertently hands Mark Schauer the keys to the George Romney Building in January.

Alternet and Salon called it last year (4.00 / 2)
Here's a key passage about the Detroit News and Nolan Finley from an article last year: The real story of Detroit's economy.
If you want to see how this dynamic plays out today, just read the abusive and sickening comments following any news story local, or national, about Detroit's troubles. For that matter just read the Detroit News-the "official" newspaper of white flight. Back in the day it was editorial policy of the News to publish a front page story every day about a crime committed by an African-American.

Recently Detroit News Editor Nolan Finley, who has built his career on being the most steadfast and flamboyant carrier of the "white man's burden," published a much hyped editorial titled "Can Detroit Govern itself?" You can guess how he answered his own question.

And his coded speech is unmistakable. Everyone knows that what Finley really means is can African Americans govern themselves? To which my answer is absolutely, if you and your one-percent pals were capable of allowing such a thing. A step in the right direction would be for the News to publish a reflective piece on how its coverage of the city and its hate filled comments section helps perpetuate racism and segregation
