Todd Courser fails one more time

by: Eric B.

Tue Apr 22, 2014 at 10:25:49 AM EDT

From MIRS this morning.

After waiting for months to do it, Attorney General Bill SCHUETTE is endorsing Lt. Gov. Brian CALLEY for the statewide ticket this fall.

The endorsement was never really in question, according to one source. The only question regarded the timing and this source told MIRS, "It was the right time to do it now."

And, after receiving the Kiss of Death from Michigan's finest legal mind, comes the real news...

The news comes as Calley's potential primary challengers for the second spot, Tea Party leader Wes NAKAGIRI and conservative activist Todd COURSER both told MIRS this morning they were unable to get the needed signatures to make the convention ballot.

This is great news for the political prospects ... in the same way that failing to qualify a "Repeal Obamacare" ballot question was a massive victory for the Tea Party.

Do the state Democrats have the same requirement for our convention? (0.00 / 0)
I hadn't heard of anyone collecting signatures to make the convention ballot before.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

If one is to go the endorsement convention route (4.00 / 1)
then there is a filing fee.  That is a newer requirement, to my knowledge.  It may be tiered based upon the office.

This is also true for state party chair.

I remember the filing fee for state chair (0.00 / 0)
That's how Brewer was re-elected by acclamation in 2011, because his opponent refused to pay the filing fee.

As for the endorsement convention route, I don't think that applies this year, as last I heard we weren't having one, just a nominating convention in late August.  What then?  Still a filing fee?

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

As I recall, yes (0.00 / 0)
I remember people collecting signatures a few years ago at a fall convention - I did sign my name to a few petitions for things like MSU Trustee, etc.

Michael referred to a filing fee - I'm not sure, but that might only be for party chair/vice chair, etc. (i.e. offices to be elected at odd-year conventions).

At any rate, I don't know if there are any requirements for these offices besides that the nominees (a) be registered voters of the state and (b) receive their party's nomination.
