Terri Lynn Land releases ad begging Gary Peters to define her

by: Eric B.

Tue Apr 22, 2014 at 17:47:19 PM EDT

Terri Lynn Land has a new ad out. It's vacuous, trite, and insults the intelligence of everyone who watches it. But, it commits an even graver sin. It begs Gary Peters to define Terri Lynn Land.

She is practically begging Gary Peters to respond with an ad (again) highlighting her support for everything in the Republican War on Women, and framing her as an enemy from within.

What a dumb move.

Update! ... Dumb, just dumb.

LANSING - Timing is everything. The same day Former Republican National Committeewoman Terri Lynn Land released her first ad, which contained more elevator music than substance, attempting to push back on her out of touch record on women's issues, she earned Rick Santorum's endorsement. Santorum would clearly like to turn the clock back on Michigan women.

Why on Earth would she even go public with this at all? The only people Rick Santorum carries any weight with are conservative Catholics, and he couldn't even win the 2012 Republican primary here. His endorsement carries no value in the general election, and undercuts her own first ad by tying herself to Santorums decidedly anti-woman ideas. Whoever is responsible for signing off on this ought to be fired, even if it's the candidate herself.

Ah, the all-important Santorum endorsement!
Guaranteed to sway exactly two votes!

Now on Great Lakes, Great Times, Great Scott: Cotter vs. Jesus and Reagan

Not to be confused with the Herman Cain endorsement
Cain was an answer to a clue on tonight's game of Jeopardy, and none of the three contestants could come up with his name. If hard-core trivia-heads can't remember the guy, who does?

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

He thinks he speaks for many millions of voters
People like Santorum and our own Gary Glenn (originally from Idaho) honestly believe they speak for ~80% of the voters.  Nothing seems to convince them otherwise.

Just saw
I just saw the commercial a few minutes ago on television (back-ended by another outside group ad).  I don't get it.  I'm not saying that as some kind of political rhetorical thing, I honestly don't get it.  It's a terrible ad, and she should fire someone for making her look so damned silly.  This is how you introduce yourself in your first ad?  Really?

In the contest between the two candidate's introduction ads, it's not even close.  Gary is serious about winning this...and Terri is not.  It's really that simple.

Okay, I rewatched it and get why she doesn't talk for seconds on end.  It's still an incredibly goofy ad, and not in the way that it's going to convince anyone to give her a second look.  It's not that snarky ads can't work, it's just that this one is plain horrible.  She needs to fire whoever convinced her that this was a good idea.

This is supposed to be funny
...and the answer is supposed to be obvious.  Just the same, it's dumb and almost Fred Davis level weird.

Just saw the Land ad on the late local news
On the Dudgeon Sports Analogy Scale, it ranks between an unforced error and an own goal.

I hope the Land campaign has given a lucrative, long-term contract to the firm responsible for this stinker of an ad.

This is Christine O'Donnell level dumb
Terri Lynn Land, 2014: "I'm NOT waging a war on women."

Christine O'Donnell, 2010: "I'm NOT a witch."

If your primary ad buy is intended to send a message of denial, you've already lost.

Here's what David Nir at Daily Kos had to say about it.
MI-Sen: Wow. Republican Terri Lynn Land's new ad-her first of the race-is just painfully vapid. As gentle piano music plays, Land starts off by saying "Congressman Gary Peters and his buddies want you to believe I'm waging a war on women." Incredulous, Land asks, "Really?", then insists: "Think about that for a moment." The music shifts to a peppier, almost annoying trope that signifies "waiting around" as Land takes a sip of her coffee, looks at her watch, shakes her head ... and says nothing at all for 12 seconds.

Then, thinking she's the cleverest lady ever, Land finally breaks her silence and declares, "As a woman, I might know a little bit more about women than Gary Peters." My only response: Man. This kind of guffawing rejoinder to substantive policy criticisms is truly pathetic. Anyone swayed by this kind of "argument" is almost certainly already very hostile to Democrats-the sort of conservative who declares, "There's no 'War on Women' because Monica Lewinsky!" It's hard to imagine this ad will persuade anyone persuadable, but the fact that Land's even put it out suggests she thinks this topic makes her vulnerable.

Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest for 4/23.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

Land is going on the defensive before most voters know there's anything to defend. Peters can now proceed to define Land for all those folks who know her only as the lady who used to run the SoS offices.

Fewer and fewer people even know Land as that "lady"
To most voters, Secretary of State is such an anonymous position that for decades every SoS office had the current Secretary's NAME in big letters as part of the exterior signage.

It may actually have been Terri Lynn Land who did away with that practice, as it was a clear waste of taxpayer dollars changing every SoS office sign in Michigan whenever the office changed hands.

Or it might have been Candice Miller. All those Republican ladies tend to blur into each other...which is kind of the point I was making.

Nowadays, the only time people remember the Secretary's name is when she does something illegal, stupid or rabidly partisan.

So if Land was counting on instant name recognition without saying a word, she's sadly mistaken.

She needed to shout in letters as big as the SoS office signage used to be -- "I WAS ELECTED TO STATEWIDE OFFICE TWICE!"

Land's ad
is definitely sexist, to both men and women.

First, she is saying that because Gary Peters is a man, he can't honestly know as much about women's issues as she does, even though a large majority of women support what he believes. My girlfriend is a woman, does that mean she should be representing all women on their issues? Probably not.

I spoke with a Republican friend of mine yesterday who said that Dems use this kind of reasoning all the time when it comes to abortion issues. However, outlawing abortion is a lawmaking body, run mostly by men, physically prohibiting women from doing what they want with their own bodies. Completely different.

Secondly, the fact that she is trying to get votes simply by saying she is a woman, so she must be in favor of women's issues, is sexist against women. Does she think women are dumb enough to just vote for someone because they're a woman? A large majority of people will not do this. As we saw with McCain-Palin, just because you are a woman, doesn't mean you get their vote.
