Rick Jones wishes to mollify the masses with a 30 buck a week raise

And here I thought the Legislature was dead set against doing anything with the minimum wage this year.

LANSING — The state’s minimum wage of $7.40 an hour would go to $8.15, and the minimum wage paid to tipped employees like wait staff and bartenders would go from $2.65 to $2.75 per hour under a bill proposed by Sen. Rick Jones.

The bill, which was introduced Thursday, is intended to usurp a petition drive underway in the state that would raise the minimum wage for all employees to $10.10 per hour, phased in through 2017.

Why does this feel like it's not going to be a real thing, that what we have here is the introduction of legislation intended to generate earned media by pretending that it's a serious proposal rather than just a cheap opportunity for Rick Jones to tell a reporter how awful raising the minimum wage would be?

“My intent is to stop the ballot initiative because of the crushing blow it would deal to Michigan restaurants. A lot of good friends work as waiters and waitresses and they don’t want these jobs to go away,” he said. “A typical restaurant in my district would lose $250,000 a year, which would result in massive layoffs or closing the restaurants.”

Yeah, like that.

He knows (4.00 / 4)
He knows like everyone else that if this makes the ballot, it's as good as passed.  It's really kind of pathetic to watch this.  We've tried and tried for years to get these people to take the working folks seriously.  Not until it's too late do they see that we were serious.  We will not be turned around.

What Rick and his ilk have obstructed in the legislature, we will get at the ballot box.  Negotiations are over.  You got Right to Mooch (during a lame-duck, no less), pension taxes, education cuts to pay for massive business tax breaks, a beefed emergency manager, more abortion restrictions, unprecedented partisan redistricting of a local county commmission (Oakland County), the banning of same-sex employee benefits...all within less than four years.  It's our turn.

Rick Jones (4.00 / 1)
is truly disgusting. A ten cent an hour raise for waitstaff? Is he really so arrogant and out of touch that he thinks the people who do this work will not be offended by his generous offer of a four dollar a week raise?

Rick Jones had better frequent only those restaurants where his "good friends" work (0.00 / 0)
I mean, you think you'll know if your food's been spat in by the taste, but trust me, you won't.
