Monty Burns has a sad that he might lose his monopoly

by: Eric B.

Thu May 01, 2014 at 14:04:10 PM EDT

The attorney for Monty Burns tells a judge that if she doesn't act, he might have to face competition in the marketplace.

WASHINGTON — Matthew Moroun, whose family owns the Ambassador Bridge to Canada, told a federal judge Wednesday that if a Coast Guard permit is awarded to a rival span, it may all but guarantee its construction and end his family’s decade-long effort to twin their 85-year-old Detroit River bridge.

“This is the end of the race,” Moroun, vice chairman of the Detroit International Bridge Co., told U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer at a hearing in Washington. “If they can get all their approvals — and this is the final one — before we do, they’ve won.”

Wrap your mind around that, sunshines. What he's saying here is that if the judge doesn't put a stop to the process that the Maroun family will no longer be able to put roadblocks in front of the project.

Poor baby, he seems to honestly believe that deals made back in the 20's with another company protects his border monopoly.

It's called karma, Matty.  You're a slumlord who has spent the last 20-30 years of your life trying to buy politicians to protect you from the illegality of every law you've ever flouted at the border and in Detroit.

This can't come soon enough, and it will not have happened to a more deserving slumlord.

There was never, NEVER a serious plan to twin the Ambassador (4.00 / 3)
That has ALWAYS been a stalking horse to try and prevent the second bridge from ever being built.

Exactly (0.00 / 0)
The twinning was ridiculous on its face, and it wouldn't have mattered if he was serious because it would have never been allowed.  He honestly thought we were stupid, because he said he'd build his new bridge, and then just shut down the Ambassador and use it for overflow traffic if and when necessary.  That makes absolutely no sense whatosever.  I saw the renderings of the thing; it's a damned joke.

Quick Rundown of WHY it was ridiculous (4.00 / 2)
It never would have passed Homeland Security review -- if one span is a single point of failure in case of disaster or terrorist attack, then a second span RIGHT NEXT TO IT changes nothing. It's STILL a single point of failure.

Using the same access roads and on/off ramps simply changes the bottleneck from the bridge back to the approaches.

The City of Windsor and Province of Ontario were, and presumably remain, UTTERLY OPPOSED to the status quo of thousands of trucks rumnbling through Windsor's neighborhoods.

Revenue stream -- There would be phases of the twin span's construction where the Ambassador itself would have to close. It's an inevitable aspect of construction. Matty wouldn't want to not be collecting tolls for weeks at a time. Certainly not for something that won't generate a dime of additional revenue until years after Moroun is stone dead.

Finally on my quick-and-dirty short list is...TRUST.

Say Matty Moroun got his way, and a compliant Republican legislature overrode Rick Snyders's veto (because Snyder is a whiny little bitch who can never get his way with this Legislature) and signed off on his scheme for a public-private partnership to twin the Ambassador.

Jump ahead maybe four years. There's a half-finished second span, with maybe $2 billion already spent. Matty Moroun (or his son) holds a Friday press conference and says with a smile, "We need another $2 billion to complete this project. Either pony up or I'll have to fire all the work crews and stop construction."

Seriously. Approving a twin span would have been like BEGGING to be rickrolled and extorted for FAR MORE money than Moroun's initial lowball estimate.
