The Empire Strikes Back, with Mike Rogers starring as Sir John Gielgud

Like Obi Wan Kenobi, if you strike him down, he shall become more powerful than you ever imagined. Mike Rogers gets behind another Mike, not because he'd make an effective representative of his constituents and voice for Michigan, but because the alternative is so awful.

"I'm here supporting Mike Bishop because I think he will not embarrass this district," (retiring Congressman Mike) Rogers said in a thinly veiled shot at GOP primary opponent Tom McMillin. "(Bishop) will work on conservative solutions to very important problems that impact everybody, both Democrats and Republican in this district."

Bishop is running in the Republican primary against State Rep. Tom McMillin, who officially launched his campaign on Saturday with U.S. Rep Justin Amash, R-Cascade Township.

When Rogers first announced his retirement, I was told by someone with famiiarity that he was motivated heavily by how ineffective and partisan Congress had become. His pending loss of a plum committee chairmanship probably helped, too. If you read in between the lines here, you see the long simmering feud between Rogers and Lil' Fella, that is carrying itself over into Lil' Fella's own district, where the reviled GOP Establishment has left him hanging.

Washington— Not one fellow Michigan congressional Republican has donated money to U.S. Rep. Justin Amash in his competitive GOP primary race against Grand Rapids area businessman Brian Ellis.

In fact, two retiring congressmen said they are considering giving cash to the Cascade Township Republican’s opponent.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, the House Intelligence Committee chairman from Howell, has gone so far as to say he would “likely” support Ellis — a highly unusual move for a colleague to take against an incumbent from the same party. “I think he’d far better represent that district and the values that they hold true,” Rogers said.

“I don’t give to candidates unless they ask me,” (Dave) Camp said. Asked whether he’d give to Ellis if Ellis asked, Camp said he’d consider it.

“I don’t really want to be critical of Justin in the press,” Camp said. “... But I think his votes speak for themselves. I haven’t always agreed with everything.”

There's more to this than just a handful of votes. The story fails to remind readers that Lil' Fella was more than just an outlier on votes, but that he was a vocal and prominent member of the failed insurgency against Speaker of the House John Boehner, a rebellion touched off by Lil' Fella's vote against the Ryan budget ... a vote he took because it didn't go far enough. Dave Camp is friends with the Speaker.

If Amash is back in Washington come January
you can be darned sure he'll play a lead role in preventing Boehner from returning as Speaker of the House.

Great Lakes, Great Times.

I think Boehner is already toast.
He's losing a lot of friends, and while probably guys like John Moolenaar, who I assume will replace Dave Camp, will be loyal foot soldiers for the Establishment that elected Boehner, they won't have the influence of a Dave Camp.

That's your real story about lost clout, by the way.

True, but
perhaps Liberty lover Peter Konetchy takes the nomination whilst Moolenaar and Mitchell split the mainstream / establishment votes? I imagine he is from the Justin Amash school of thought when it comes to the incredibly shrinking Speaker of the House.

It's a good theory...
And Mitchell has drawn some quality people to work for him, but it's a Midland district and Dave Camp is very popular here. My guess is that even in today's Republican Party he still holds enough sway to name his own replacement.

We shall know in 90 days!
I obviously defer to your Isabella-based judgment.

Konetchy kon only ketch on with Rand Paul-type dollars, about which I have heard nary a peep as it relates to his campaign.
