A war for the soul, just like in Platoon ... except that Barnes is evil and Elias is batshit crazy

by: Eric B.

Mon May 12, 2014 at 11:37:11 AM EDT

There's a war on for the soul of the Republican Party, writes a Cathy Reisenwitz at Townhall, and it's foot soldiers are Lil' Fella and Brian Ellis. It's a hoot of a piece, pitting evil Big Bidness against the little guy for little gubmint.

Think of every area where the GOP has strayed from its conservative roots. The bailouts. TARP. Out-of-control government spying. Job-killing corporate cronyism. There is one man in Congress consistently saying “no” to making government bigger and less accountable. His name is Justin Amash, and the establishment has taken notice.

This has always, to the Beltway media and people who parachute in to cover Lil' Fella's chilly embrace of his home state, been the crux of the argument that Lil' Fella has crossover appeal to Democrats and progressives. He hates unchecked spying and unfettered drone war, which is great, but he also worships horned Sumerian gods dead Austrian economists. By the way, probably shouldn't mention that not all bailouts are created equal ... that those that were in fact bridge loans to the auto industry are pretty popular hereabouts.

Still, what sons of Satan have Eillis' back?

How big? Let’s look at who’s on board the Ellis train. So far he’s gotten hefty checks from the Meijers family, owners of the massive Midwest supermarket chain, the political arms of Home Depot, Dow Chemical and the International Franchise Association, the Business-Industry Political Action Committee, the Association for Advanced Life Underwriters, and the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue is on board, as well as former Michigan congressman Steve LaTourette.

A. Is anyone else driven into a rage when someone refers to it as Meijers? It's Meijer, people. Meijer. No 's'. B. LaTourette is from Ohio.

No matter. Later on, we find out what little guys have Lil' Fella's back.

But that doesn’t mean the fight is over. Big business might be in Ellis’ corner, but small-government freedom fighters are backing Amash. Anti-cronyism crusaders from the Koch Brothers to the Club for Growth to Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks are throwing money at Amash’s campaign. Individual libertarians are giving as well, such as the DeVos family. ...

And, herein we see the nut of things. Big Business is in Ellis' corner, but the Kock brothers get counted twice, as themselves and as Americans for Prosperity, belying an agenda that seeks to give people as many votes as dollars that they can carry around as folding money. Anyway, it's strains credulty that someone could think of the DeVoses, people who built an empire by convincing others to turn over their wealth to them in exchange for nothing, as not Big Business.

What we really see here is indeed a fight for the soul of the Republican Party. You've got the soulless greedy bastards behind Brian Ellis, and the batshit crazy nihilists of the Libertarian wing, supported financially by soulless greedy bastards in big business.

Update! ... Tiger Beat on the Potomac says that Citizens United Political Victory Fund is giving money to Lil' Fella. Keep in mind that when Lil' Fella starts waxing on about the evils of Big Bidness and Big Gubmint that he's receiving money from the organization that helped open the spigots of corporate and dark money into our political system in an attempt to buy our government. Just keep that in mind.

Meijer's (4.00 / 2)
In southeast Michigan, it's very common for people to refer to Ford Motor Company as "Ford's". It supposedly dates back to when Henry Ford was alive and people personalized the Rouge plant and other factories as "Ford's." It's also common for people around here to say they're going to "Kroger's" or "K-Mart's". Annoying as hell, but common.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

One of those things (4.00 / 2)
That newcomers to the area (like me back in 78) notice right away and find really bizarre. I learned to refer to the fizzy stuff you drink as pop, but I refuse to call the Ford Motor Company Ford's. I have, however, been known to refer to Meijer (shifty takers or shitty acres, your choice) as Meijer's.

Just Friday, I heard it called "Shifty Acres" (4.00 / 1)
I've been in the state 25 years and it's the first time I recall hearing that one.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

We can probably come up with a list of other words and phrases unique to the area (0.00 / 0)
I never heard of a "party store" before moving here; and while I've seen Coney Island restaurants in other Midwestern towns such as South Bend, no other metro area has as many as Greater Detroit.

Metro Detroiters refer to highways by their names (e.g., the Lodge, the Jefferies), which is the opposite of what Californians call them (e.g., the 405). It's the only place where I've seen the Michigan left, where you make a right turn onto a divided highway, get into the left lane as fast as possible, and make a U-turn. Then again, I grew up in New Jersey, the only state that has jug-handle turns, so we're even.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Michigan has Jughandles (0.00 / 0)
There are several reverse jughandles (and variants) on Van Dyke in Sterling Heights north of the GM Tech Center.

There is also a standard jughandle on Gratiot in New Haven.

This West-Sider wasn't aware of their existence (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for the info.

It's "Meijer's" and "Kroger's" to me.  Always have been, even though I know better.  I hear it's a Michigan thing.  I've been lucky to not hear KMart's and Ford's.  That just sounds weird. lol
