Gail Collins writes about Terri Lynn Land's ad, says the GOP wishes they had more of her

Gail Collins' latest column is about the gender dynamics of this year's campaign season. Saw it getting shared yesterday. Thought I'd slap it in here, nothing two things in particular.

The fights aren’t all going to be liberal woman versus conservative man. In Michigan, the Republican candidate, Terri Lynn Land, has an ad in which she tells the viewers that Democrats like her opponent, Representative Gary Peters, “want you to believe I’m waging war on women. Really. Think about that for a moment.” And then she just sits there drinking coffee. It’s pretty effective, except for the part where Peters did not actually accuse her of waging a war on women.

It's ... not terribly effective. It might have been at one time to put out an ad like this, but all that bought-and-paid-for silence provided was an opportunity for someone to fill in the silence pretty cheaply. Also, it's insulting to any thinking person who has paid cursory attention the last couple of years to the sorts of things Terri Lynn Land's party has supported. It's premised on the idea that women will get behing Terri Lynn Land simply because she's a woman, which is understandable since it's the same bunch of people who insist that Barack Obama was only elected because of the color of his skin.

Anyway, a couple of paragraphs later.

The Republican establishment would love to have more women candidates — particularly the kind like Land who campaign well and do not have plans to rock the boat on any subject whatsoever. ...

It's probably the polling that has national media people convinced that Terri Lynn Land is campaigning well. Has to be the polling. From a local perspective, she looks like a terrible candidate, and it appears that GOP strategy is intended to mask that by not allowing her to speak to anyone about anything. It also appears that their strategy is to let someone else do their campaigning for them by buying campaign ads.

Anyway, take that bit about not rocking the boat on any subject whatsoever and her party's support for issues and policies prosecuted by the menfolk who think they know best how the wimmenfolk should use their lady parts, and return to the first quoted paragraph. Render your judgments accordingly.
