It is okay to call clownish people "clownish"

Terri Lynn Land's entire Senate campaign appears predicated on the idea that if she's forced to take a firm position on something that she'll be knocked over by the next stiff breeze to come along so she'd be better off not. The National Journal takes note that some campaigns this year are planning to make climate change a prominent issue. And as peanut butter to chocolate, the two are merged in happy union.

Before that, Democratic Rep. Gary Peters, who is running for the Senate in Michigan, called on his Republican rival Terri Lynn Land to state for the record whether she believes the science behind man-made climate change. He even announced to The Washington Post's Greg Sargent that he intends to make climate change a key issue in the race.

In a scientifically literate nation, this would be a perfectly sensible thing for Gary Peters to do. In our nation, I have my doubts, but not because Peters is in the wrong. It's that I've spent many long years debating climate change on the Internet that's the problem.

Back to the race, however. Let's just accept that Terri Lynn Land is running a climate skeptic's campaign. She hasn't said so and isn't going to say so and we should assume that barring miracle that she's not going to say so. We have to work with what we have, which is that she's advocated paralysis by analysis, which is to say that we need to have a conversation on it. That's true, but we don't need to have the conversation that Terri Lynn Land wants to have. We need to have a conversation on how to address it, and not whether it is real or human-driven (it is). We also know that she's running hard on the Keystone pipeline, which would make the problem much worse, all for economic activity that is roughly half the climate change-related costs incurred by Superstorm Sandy in New York alone.

As the man says, "That, my friends, is good enough for gubmint work."

Terri Lynn Land, Generic Republican (4.00 / 2)
Is there any position she's taken, beyond the "I'm a woman, so the idea of my waging a war on women is silly," that is distinctive?  Any issue of hers that is the least bit localized?  Seriously, I'm not seeing one yet.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!

She must figure (0.00 / 0)
it worked for Snyder, so... And in the meantime, Peters is running around talking to people and staking out actual positions on issues. Maybe she can join Mike Rogers on his radio show?

Snyder had unique branding as "One Tough Nerd" (0.00 / 0)
He also had the advantage of running to the center against a bunch of hard-right contenders in the primary.  Land has neither.

Greetings from Detroit, Ground Zero of the post-industrial future!
