Today in campaign news: Fate of Conyers to be decided today

by: Eric B.

Fri May 23, 2014 at 10:09:41 AM EDT

It's a holiday weekend Friday, so don't expect big news until late this afternoon when something horrible will happen. Anywhoo, I'll update this if more stuff comes in.

*--John Conyers' fate as a candidate could be decided today. In the same story, someone hoping to run for a Detroit judgeship was also tossed off the ballot for fraudulent signatures and other improprieties. Anywhoo, I'll try to post about this later.

*--Bobby McKenzie's campaign (CD-11) announced yesterday mid-afternoon that it had received the endorsement of John Dingell.

*--Pam Byrnes (CD-07) this morning has called for the resignation of Eric Shinseki, secretary of veterans affairs. You know who else did this? Alison Lundergan Grimes, who is in a tight race with Mitch McConnell in a very tight Kentucky Senate race.

So the DCCC is throwing Eric Shinseki under the bus? (4.00 / 1)
Typical of their brand of "centrist" surface-level-thinking BS.

Why couldn't Pam Byrnes...I dunno...denounce Rep. Tim Walberg for his votes in favor of the Sequester and the Government shutdown that helped bring on this "sudden" VA crisis?

I don't know. I just don't know. (0.00 / 0)
I think the problem people are focusing on is the covering up of things. The funding crisis is entirely different.

Narrative (4.00 / 1)
Why? Because many Democrats still don't understand the need for proactively setting a narrative rather than letting Republicans set it for us.

Sometimes Democrats' communications strategy reminds me of the Tigers' bullpen: I really want to believe it exists, but I'm not seeing much evidence of it.

Time after time, Democrats back down from a fight (0.00 / 0)
They're so afraid of offending mythical "swing" voters that they don't stand for anything, not even core beliefs like preserving Social Security and protecting working people.

Where does this cowardice and incompetence come from? I blame Democratic Party consultants, who make the Detroit Lions' scouting department look as smart as the Enigma code-breakers.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

And we lose elections! (4.00 / 2)

Yes! And then we lose elections because we don't give our base voters a reason to get out and vote.

Classic example: Pat Miles. Great guy, would've been a fine member of Congress - but in 2010 he vowed that he wouldn't vote for Pelosi for Speaker if Dems were to control the House. Then Miles - a Harvard Law alum - did all he could to distance himself from his former classmate, the current President of the United States.

The strategy was to distance himself from progressive ideals in hopes of winning a right-leaning district.

Pat lost to Justin Frickin' Amash by 22 points.

I had hoped we would've learned our lesson from 2002 and 2004.

Got bad news? Get it out there today (4.00 / 1)
This is the day for politicians, campaigns, etc., to get any bad news out there. It's Friday, and we're heading into a holiday weekend.

Possibly related: It was Friday of Memorial Day weekend in 2012 when the news came out about troubles with McCotter's signatures.

Pam Byrnes (4.00 / 1)
It's unacceptable comments such as her call for Ric Shinseki's head that caused me to stop contributing to the House and Senate committees years ago. I'll decide where to send my money, not have my money to go people like Byrnes who grab on to the Fox narrative in order to win a right-leaning district.

Shame on Pam Byrnes.

Shocking! Pam Byrnes acted like a politician (4.00 / 1)
I agree with everything that's been said about the DCCC here. They are a bunch of incompetent bullies who practice cookie cutter politics but hold the keys to the kingdom when it comes to candidate money for Democratic non-incumbents.

What the DCCC did to Bobby McKenzie--recruiting him, then dumping him after he quit his job--is par for the course.

However...Pam Byrnes did the right political thing by calling for Shinseki's scalp because it took an issue off the table that Walberg would certainly have used against her.

Was it the right thing from a non-political standpoint?  On the one hand, the underlying problem that led to the alleged misconduct of VA in phonying up records is the obscenity of not providing adequate funding for the VA.  On the other hand, accountability demands that the person at the top take responsibility.
