Michigan delegation split down party lines on bill prohibiting the DOD from studying climate change

A bunch of retired admirals and generals did last month what active duty military officers cannot do, which is deliver a dire warning about emerging threats to national security and lambasting Congress for ignoring them. What did Congress, specifically the House of Representatives do in response? Passed a bill forbidding the Department of Defense from using tax dollars to study said emerging threats to national security. It's like passing a bill forbidding the Defense Department from gathering intelligence on al-Qaida, except in this case the emerging threat to national security is climate change.

WASHINGTON -- The House passed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization bill on Thursday that would bar the Department of Defense from using funds to assess climate change and its implications for national security.

The amendment, from Rep. David McKinley (R-W.Va.), passed in what was nearly a party-line vote. Four Democrats voted for the amendment, and three Republicans voted against it. The bill aims to block the DOD from taking any significant action related to climate change or its potential consequences. It reads:

None of the funds authorized to be appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used to implement the U.S. Global Change Research Program National Climate Assessment, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fifth Assessment Report, the United Nation's Agenda 21 sustainable development plan, or the May 2013 Technical Update of the Social Cost of Carbon for Regulatory Impact Analysis Under Executive Order 12866.

Here's a breakdown of the vote. In case you're curious, none of the Republicans who voted against it are Michigan Republicans. It's also the sort of thing that undercuts Terri Lynn Land's insistence that we need to have a conversation about climate change, because it says that we should have that conversation from a position of ignorance.

Any good quotes from top brass? (4.00 / 1)
Has a top uniformed officer of the armed services ever made a quotable remark about the national security threat posed by climate change recently?  The reason I ask is that I want to swat Dave Camp over this, and it would be helpful if I had a "smoking gun" quote to do it with.  I've seen the Tom Ridge quote, and I'm afraid it's just not as decisive as I'd like.  I'm looking for big-time "gravitas".

The top brass (4.00 / 2)
They aren't going to do this because it violates the rule that active duty military officers simply don't meddle in policy making that way. There was a statement by retired generals and admirals as part of a consultant group that sparked all this, but I assume this is as close to the top brass as your going to get. Otherwise, what you're apt to get are hedged statements about the reality of climate change from individual officers who aren't top brass and that don't strongly condemn Congress' inaction.

Ah yes. Agenda 21 (0.00 / 0)
In the words of Charles Pierce, Agenda 21 is "the secret UN plan to steal all our golfs."

I'm beginning to think that the far right has decided to use The Paranoid Style in American Politics as a campaign manual.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Beginning?  I figured out they were two years ago, when I looked at the anti-environmental statements of Ted Cruz and Newt Gingrich.

Paul Krugman has discovered Agenda 21 paranoia

Newt Gingrich and the Republican National Committee demagoguing Agenda 21

Speaking of Agenda 21, here's its mascot, the manatee.

That doesn't change the point being made (4.00 / 1)
The GOP has indeed decided to go paranoid and stupid.  In the case of Gingrich, that was probably very calculated.

I agree with you (0.00 / 0)
He started out in politics as an intellectual wannabe. Now that the GOP has become anti-intellectual, he's reinvented himself as DIck the Butcher, the rebel from Henry VI who uttered the famous phrase, "first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers"--which, by the way, is also part of the current Republican platform.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.
