Terri Lynn Land doesn't understand what net neutrality is

by: Eric B.

Wed May 28, 2014 at 16:37:09 PM EDT

Someone asked Terri Lynn Land to expound upon remarks she made this morning on Mackinac Island about the Internet and her response answers another lingerng question: Why doesn't Terri Lynn Land answer questions from the media? From MIRS.

"I think the Internet should be free," Land said. "It is a great source of information. It's the opportunity for people to talk. I'm a Twitter fan. I'm on Twitter. And it's a great way to connect with people. So I think that's a very important part of this, and especially in emerging countries and growing communities it's a way to actually communicate and I think it's very important to have that available for everyone."

Free the Interwebz! The Interwebz has got to be free! Now, you may be keen on her explanation on what about the Interwebz needs to be free. Is it free access to broadband; free access to Twitter, which ties communities together 140-characters at a time; or, is it net neutrality?

Reporter: Right, net neutrality, which is about access to faster Internet, not free Internet.

Land: Right. I think that … I think it's important that the costs don't go up so people can't have access to the Internet, meaning that what he said, if it's faster than they're gonna charge more to the consumer."

I'm not quite sure what to make of it, but I do feel comfortable saying that it appears that Terri Lynn Land has taken a strong campaign position against broadband Internet. By the way, the idea that making the Internet faster will translate into prohbitively high consumer prices is intuitive but untrue. Turns out the best thing you can do is not engage in monopolistic behavior. But, that's another story.

Twitter is an ideal medium for Land (4.00 / 5)
Anything beyond 140 characters, and she's out of her depth.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.

Senator? (4.00 / 2)
She wants to be a US Senator? Isn't it customary to hire a campaign manager, who will ensure that the candidate will have ready answers to questions regarding the issues of the day? It usually makes for a better interview when you can actually respond to the topic without looking like an idiot.

Looking like an idiot? (4.00 / 3)
MLive reports that she read her answers off index cards.  The Freep timed her exposure at 150 seconds before her handlers announced she was late for something and couldn't take any more questions.

Who does she think she is? Sarah Palin?
